It seems to be a decent bike for what you want to do, FD and RD aren't anything to write home about but should get the job done. Have you thought about going for a used bike? I'm fairly sure a nicely equipped Allez can be had for around $700. Marin bikes have a pretty good reputation as far as I know and I've heard the LHT is a bit if a pig. Good construction and decently equipped but heavy and not a great climber. What are your plans with the Pug? Have you thought of upgrading it to brifters and a 9 speed rear? It takes some work but might also be an option.
