How critical is size on a Tour Easy?
I should ride a Med. frame.
There's a small advertised locally. Any chance it would work ok? Out of the question?

Probably won't work. There's not much room for adjustment on them. But go ahead and test it out.

Kind of doubt it. I ride an XL Gold Rush, but started out with a large Tour Easy. On the TE I had the seat all the way back in the adjustment slots and my knees still ached because the adjustment was too "close". When I switched to the correct size, I was a lot more comfortable and a little faster.

Here's Easy Racers chart showing what frame is needed for a person's X-seam. https://easyracers.com/docs/X_Seam_Guide.pdf
Since you ride a medium and smallest X-seam for a medium is 39" and largest X-seam for a small is 39.5", you would have to have a 39.5" X-seam or less to fit a small. You can try riding it but I doubt it will fit you.
