Direct Drive Trainer
 

Has anyone used a direct drive trainer on their recumbent trike (TerraTrike Traveler for example); such as a CycleOps Hammer or a Wahoo Kickr?
They both look like they would work, but would like to hear from those who have actually trained with one.

I've used a Wahoo Kickr with my ICE VTX. My VTX bolts right in because it's 11 speed otherwise, it would require changing the cassette on the machine which I assume is the same as on any wheel.

Wow, $1,200 at REI for the ChycleOps and similar prices for the Wahoo Kickr at many on-line sites. That's some serious money. My guess is that it is not as practical in a place where you can ride outdoors much of the time in the winter. I like being able to just hop on the trike and go for a ride so I never use the standard trainer that I picked up as a discard in the trash by a nearby neighbor. This year in the Southwest there have been very few days where even the wussiest rider couldn't ride. It was in the low 70s yesterday and predicted to be in that range for the next several days. We had just a couple of days when the overnight temperatures went below freezing. Winter, where did you go?

Yes, direct drive trainer are expensive but the experience combined with Zwift make it worth it. I leave a dedicated bike on the trainer and sometimes will even ride it vs going outside in good weather. I have no hills where I am but there are plenty on Zwift. Racing in Zwift is a lot of fun too. Just about any time you want to ride, day or night, you can find a group ride or race that meets your needs. So far no recumbents (on screen) in Zwift but who knows, maybe a future update.

Trsnrtr-thanks for the reply and the picture. One thing I like about the Kickr is it is height adjustable, My trike has a 20" wheel, and the Kickr adjusts down to 24" (I think), so one wouldn't need to raise the front wheels too much to level the trike.

I like the Hammer a little better than the Kickr; mainly from comments made rating the Hammer higher.

What program do you use with the Kickr?

Do you have the photo of your recumbent on the Kickr anymore?

Wahoo Snap $500, I think I got mine for $350. Kickr at $1200. I can afford to wear out a lot of trainer tires for $700.

I have a CycleOps. Not sure what model. I use it with my Easy Racer EZ-1, and it works just fine. I am not sure what a Direct Drive trainer is. All of mine are pretty similar, with the flywheel at the back that provides direct resistance to the rear tire.
