never been banned...don't really talk on here often. If a moderator tells me that the language I used should not be used, I will happily change the wording....basically I was saying the guy is a jerk....just in a different version of the word. how about I make everyone happy and change it....it still doesn't change the fact that the guy is a jerk. It's like me going out and dropping someone on a ride who didn't know we were racing and then coming home to brag about it.

Heh - Ragbrai is a whole nother animal. When you have 20,000 bikes on the road, we take up all 4 lanes all the time, unless a car is coming, which on most days was less than ten (the police maintained the routes very strictly and residents were warned weeks prior). It was so eerie being able to crest a hill and see 1000 riders in front, and another 1000 behind. It was a neverending sea of bikes from 6a-6p.

Looking at the clip, I'd say he was avoiding crappy pavement. That was some seriously horrible stuff to be riding on.

ha..."insignificant" other...that was my LOL for the day...thanks...is the "dead head" painting on the head tube a painting or is actually raised? it is almost three dimensional looking...quite cool. I have a custom steel bike that I'd like to have extra stuff added too so I'm alway appreciative of good work. Peace....back to the roadie forum

We all know how scenery looks at various speeds, but it can seem alot different when you see it through a camera. Last February, at our annual winter meeting for the Michigan Human Powered Vehicle Association, Garrie Hill played a video from the World Human Powered Speed Challenge. A camera was placed inside Warren Beauchamp`s Barracuda-W streamliner before one of his high speed runs. By watching the scenery going by in the video the run seemed pretty slow, although Warren was going almost 65 mph. By watching the white lines on the road in the video instead of the scenery, you get a better feel of the actual speed Warren was going, but it still seemed much slower than 65mph. As for the headtube designs, yes, they are raised. They are Bondoed to the headtube prior to painting and then finished into the overall paintjob. I'll be posting more pics in the near future of some of the other designs I've done. Check back in a few weeks.

Alas, I don't visit the roadie forum much as I hung up all my road bikes a decade ago when I got 'bent. I still have them all, but they don't see the light of day much anymore.:(

On an organized ride that requires flags, I think that's about right.

BTW, if you're going to race someone, try actually participating in a race. I can round up an extra bike if you want to try it and see what slouches we racers are.

I passed the entire Colavita-Sutter Home Pro Cycling Team in my car once. I guess that makes me faster than all those guys, right?

I passed a guy in a fully geared Lance uniform while he was replacing a tube in his bike on the side of the road. I totally dropped him.

If you re-read lowracer1's posts I think you'll find that he hasn't bragged about himself anywhere...he's bragging about his bike.

If he's bragging about his bike, then he wouldn't be worried about whether the riders he passed were "the racer types", would he?

Bottom line is if you're going to brag about dropping people, do it rider vs. rider. Bents are faster in the flats and descents. Yippee. See you on the first climb. Hence the Pro Team vs. Car comment. I had the faster vehicle by definition, so it wasn't a fair comparison, was it?

In the mean time, I will gauge my successes and failures against the other CYCLISTS I race against, not their style of bike.

Most of us who have lowracers on this board do participate, and do extremely well, when we're not banned by the UCI and USCF. You'll note that nearly 100% of races do not allow recumbents. It must be because we're so slow!

No, not at all--bents were banned because the equipment gave an unfair advantage.

But you proved my point--you use yourself as an athlete and your 'bent interchangeably. 100% of races allow cyclists who ride the bike that are specified in the rules.

The fact that you hide behind your 'bent saying that you'd shred the field in a race, then say in the same breath (reading the sarcasm) that the only reason you don't race is because the UCI and USCF banned bents is pathetic. You can hop right on a DF bike that's UCI and USCF legal and race away to your heart's delight.

It's been covered ad nauseum on the roadie forum--if all parties aren't in agreement, it's not a race. It's the same asinine comment made on the roadie forum all the time, only this time it was a bent rider.

And if you took the time to READ rather than just spew vulgar garbage, you'd find that I wasn't denying that bents are faster. Nor did I ever say that anyone was riding all over the road. I didn't even debate his speed. The only thing I took issue with was the OP's comment about dropping riders when he doesn't even know if they were competing. Without a mutual agreement by everyone involved, there's no race. Period. Just check any of the 987,433 threads on the roadie forum about "_____ (got dropped by / dropped) _____" if you don't get how ridiculous that is for someone to go zipping by winning his self-proclaimed races.

Ah, but here's the scenario:

Well into a century ride, OP passes a group of riders. OP slows down to the group's pace, hanging out in front of them 100-200 feet. If group speeds up to catch and then tries to repass, it's a race. If nobody takes the bait (hence the thread title,) then he speeds back up to his normal pace and eventually passes other worthies, where the behavior is repeated.

OK, it's a little childish. The OP has already proved his superior cruising speed by passing the group the first time. But then, the victim group had the option of continuing at their previous speed and avoiding the followup show. Personally, I just make the original pass stick. If they want to make it a race, it rarely matters anyway.

Against a mixed field, of course. Oh, and I never said I don't race. I actually compete in tris quite often, and do rather well. My timing chip averages this year on my upright have never been less than 19.4 mph, even after some pretty grueling swims. And that's with no drafting allowed during the race. Not top of the field, but pretty good. So yes, I am an athlete. I'm a wrestling coach and a powerlifter as well. In my spare time (yeah right) I teach martial arts - though the more I bike, the less of that I am able to fit in these days. And when you put me on my lowracer, I just get faster and faster. Not to mention I ride with less pain, which translates to better endurance. I did the computer chip option on the HHH this year as well on my lowracer, and was clocked for one 10 mile stretch or so with an average of 33mph. It was extremely smooth pavement and flat - that's definately not a normal cruising speed for me by any means.

I was speaking about bents versus uprights in general. Most benters are not athletes. Some of us however are.

BooHoo. Try the following to get back at those nasty roadies:

Take bent out for a ride.

Find a nice shady place to pull over.

Lay and wait for roadies.

When they're about a minute or so out, put down bucket of fried chicken.

Turn on head/ wobble cam.

Hug the centerline forcing those nasty roadies to pass into oncoming traffic.

Put the hammer down overtaking them.

When you reach the bottom of the hill turn head/wobble cam off.

Should take about 2:44.

Return to bucket of chicken.

Repeat if you have the legs.

I like how you attampted to take the moral high ground about how vulgar I am. Does that work for you when the football team is giving you a wedgie? Look at the history of the thread. It was roadies who started with the name calling and insults. Is it because the OP violated the roadie reality code of when bikes are really racing and when you can feel good about it? There is something out of whack here, and I dont' have to be the bigger person to see that. Can you understand that?
