Got my first decent ride in. Big smiles!

This past weekend my family made our annual pilgramage to Maryland's Eastern Shore for the American Lung Association Asthma Ride. With none of us having more than a few miles worth of seat time this year, we were not planning on taking one of the longer routes. We checked the maps over, the 20 mile split was at about 13 miles, the 40 mile split was at about 27 miles, and the 62 mile split was somewhere out there at maybe the 40 mile mark?

The route is fairly flat but windy.

Well, the Cafe was feeling good and early in the ride I felt like I could do the century despite my lack of miles. My with has been riding a Cafe for a couple of years, both kids were on road bikes. My daughter wasn't feeling so ambitious 10 miles into the ride, so she decided to break out to do the 20 mile ride.

When we got to the 40 mile split, my right knee was talking to me but nothing unusual. The boy was cocky and the wife was hard headed, so they wanted to go and do the metric, so that's how we turned.

By the time we got to about 48 miles or so, my son was feeling the effects of the butt hatchet. Wife was hurting, but doing OK, and Iwas starting to feel recumbutt and cramping in my left calf. Wife kept keepin' on, and I tried to pace Jason. I found that me hanging with him caused him to go slower, so I caught up to my wife and left him to his own devices. We finished the metric at a 13 MPH pace and Jason came in about 5 minutes behind us.

My butt is still sore, but I think it's the change in what muscles are used. My calf has a sore spot where I was cramping, and I've got a bad burn on my right knee and down my shin where I missed it with the lotion.

Lessons learned - I kept catching myself pulling on the bars, so i had to tell myself to relax. Different muscles are going to hurt, and don't miss any spots with the sun screen. Also, got to find the bounce in the rear tire that shows itself when the road is smooth.

I'm lovin' being a 'bent rider!

It sounds like either the tire or wheel is out of true.

It's one spot, I haven't had a chance to throw it on the stand yet but I suspect that the tire is not seated evenly. It's not out of true lateraly, it's a bounce rather than a wobble.

You're VERY upright. Get that seatback reclined some and the recumbutt will be gone. Great ride!

There are two kinds of recumbutt, one just due to the pressure of sitting in the
same position for long periods; the other is due to the use of gluteal muscles
that are not used as much as when riding DF bikes. The muscle aspect goes
away with conditioning. The pressure induced pain, unlike riding a DF where
one is free to move around, hitch to one side, stand etc, is not as easily fixed
though acclimation does tend to work here also. A change in seat angle, even
only a few degrees helps as aikigreg suggests.
