Recumbent What IS that thing?! Recumbents may be odd looking, but they have many advantages over a "wedgie" bicycle. Discuss the in's and out's recumbent lifestyle in the recumbent forum.

Tritan(HPM)

A few months ago I was over at my aunt's house with my bike. Her friend suggested that she get a bike so they could ride together. My aunt said that she was afraid that she wouldn't be able to balance on a two-wheeler any more.

When I finally sold my late father's car--making the transition to car-free--I used the procedes to order a HPM Tritan for her. (www.catoregon.org/hpm)

It finally came and we found that even with the seat pushed up as far as it would go, her feet wouldn't reach the pedals. She's only 5'1", and her legs are proportionately short.

The HPM people say that we can drill a couple of holes in the frame to move the seat up another few inches. Her son, my cousin, is an engineer, so I guess he can do that. (I should mention that I don't live in the same town as she does.)

Further updates as they occur.

Unfortunately, my aunt has decided that she does not like the trike. Not that it is a bad machine, but she is nervous (quite unreasonably in my opinion) about taking it on the road, even the quiet backstreets of her residential neighborhood. She does think, though, that it is a great machine, and probably useful to the right person. As a matter of fact, a friend of hers has a relative with a spinal cord injury. The person is not a paraplegic, but he does have some problems that prevent him from riding a conventional bicycle, which he did before his accident. The friend says that he should be able to manage the Tritan, though, which would give him both more mobility and a way to get some exercise.

I should also say that my aunt (and my cousin, who is an engineer) both think that the Tritan is a wonderful machine--they just can't use it. Also, I found the HPM people very friendly and helpful; I understand that most of the people that work there are kids, and I am very impressed with them.

I am thinking of using the proceeds from the sale of the Tritan to get their Cyclops tadpole trike.

The friend to whom she was going to sell the trike backed out. She's thinking of donating it to the Shriners' Crippled Children's Hospital in Lexington.

If anyone in the Lexington area might be interested, contact the Pedal People Bike Shop; they assembled it for her, and could get you in touch with her. (I don't want to give out her name/address on a public forum.)

I don't have it here; it is in Lexington, and my aunt is not computer savvy enough to do it herself.

Here is the information on the bike shop:

Pedal Power Bike Shop
401 S Upper St
Lexington, KY 40508
859-255-6408

Again, anyone in the Lexington, KY area who might be interested, call them and they'll put you in touch with my aunt.

My aunt has said that she is willing to have me give out her contact information:

Ms. Anita Mason, 859-373-9967; she lives in the Landsdown district, not too far from the Arboretum.

I just visited her over the weekend and she is asking $950 for it.

I took it out for a spin in the neighborhood, and it is a lot of fun. It does have a very wide turning radius, though.
