Anybody ride a Velomobile?

Interesting article in the Anchorage (Alaska) Daily News about a guy who rides a Leitra Velomobile (a recumbent with a protective plastic shell), http://www.adn.com/front/story/572433.html. There are photos and a short video with the story. For more info about the Leitra brand (from Denmark), http://leitra.dk/news.php.

That is an amazing looking vehicle. I will have to put that on my list of bikes to get someday. I like the seredipity of calling to get information just when the guy is about to sell his Velodrome.

Karma is a wonderful thing.

I recently found out that the manufacturers of my trike have teamed up with a kayak maker in Canada to make hard shells for my model.

Now if I just had a garage... :P

Details? Is this in the bag or still pending? Who, what, inquiring minds want to know!

There's the link and the picture and info for the shell (Borealis) is down toward the bottom of the page. The trike model it fits is the Trice Q-NT (Narrow Track). Awesome bunch of guys that produce the trike.

The main drawback I can see with the shell is that it still leaves the head out in the open air, but I still think it's neat.

I have a Leitra like the one in Anchorage. The weather protection is nice, BUT it is quite noisey in there and outside sound is attenuated so traffic is no audible. With a head out design you can hear much better.

I'd ride a Leitra velomobile if I were made of money.....and lived in Alaska. ( But then if I were made of money....why would I live in Alaska?)

Oh, I just love it! That type of thinking is what inspire my electric-recumbent combination. ...I guess I'd need a shell to complete it.

The Bricycle is a prototype delta trike with electric assist that I have been working on for more than a year now.
A local news story at http://www.newsnet5.com/video/17790356/index.html
A video on YouTube and 11/22/08 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ezbp2rZ39jA
It has been an interesting project.

Is that you in the videos? How much have you spent on the project?

sauerleigh 11-27-08 09:10 AM

It's me in the videos.
I spent about $2000.00. I've really totaled everything yet but that should pretty close.
I went for a ride this morning. It was 29 degrees F, no wind and dry. I went 5.5 miles on 3.66ah's of my 12ah SLA's, with 31 starts and an elevation change of 88 feet. Top speed was 25.9 mph, avg speed 13.9 mph without peddling. I made the exact same trip when the temp was 53 degrees F and used 3.38ah's.
I was wearing a balaclava under my helmet, a down lined jacket, tennis shoes and light weight cotton gloves. My hands and feet were cold but otherwise I was comfortable.

I put up a few early photos on flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/9395288...7610217176063/
