Working so hard to go so slow

I committed to riding the biking portion of a triathalon with some guys at work. You are only allowed to ride a wedgie so I have the old road bike dusted off and started riding to work. I can't believe how hard I have to work to go so slow and how uncomfortable it is. I guess I have been spoiled by the comfort and efficiency of my bent that I have been riding for the last 5 years.

Do the rules specifically forbid you from riding your recumbent? If they do, why?

Canuck1 04-21-04 11:59 AM

Yeah, you have to ride a wedgie...I asked. They follow the IFBT(?) rules just like the Tour De France etc.

You will adjust rapidly to the wedgie comfort wise, but the muscles may take a while a lot more upper body involvement too.
People are usually complaining about how slow the recumbent they just bought is :)
I've only ridden a recumbent for an hour and was suprised how mutch less energy it took (I was slow but the trike was worn out) compared to my road bike.
I am building a trike at the moment as I can't afford to buy one.
Hang in there.

Ah.....

Maybe a good reason to continue riding both a wedgie and a recumbent. Keeps both sets of muscles in shape. Nice cross training at least.

If your old road bike has been sitting in storage and dusty for 5 years, did you overhaul the usual items to get it up to speed?

Actually today was my third ride to work on the wedgie and it is feeling much better.

That's a good point though...usually I ride to work every second day to allow my muscles to recover but maybe I could ride the bent every send day and use different muscles. I'll try it.

I started riding to give heart a work out. Bought a recumbent for a change of pace from the wedgie and found it difficult to get the elevated heart rate from riding the recumbent. Now I get the exercise from the wedgie and use the recumbent more for a leisurely cruise!!! Also for when I plan to take a longer trip.

lowell the cruising is exactly why I am trying :) to build a trike. And as a bonus I'll get to hit the leg muscle a different way.
