Sun EZ rims

I should be getting back to work, but as I was riding home, I stopped to air up my tires, and apparently blew out a side of my rear rim!

This is a stupid question after the fact, but aren't Schwalbe Marathons 90 psi rated tires? I guess I should have paid attention to how many psi the RIMS can handle. Long story short, after airing up, the bike kept thumping in the back and I couldn't see why the brakes were catching. I finally looked on both sides of the rim and saw a nearly 3/4" long slit in the rim where the tire bead pushed out.

Is this something I should have been watching for? I don't know how many miles are on the bike, but it should be a 7 year old bike, roughly.

What are some of the things I can do to ensure this doesn't happen in the future?

Thanks,

What does the brake surface of your rim feel like? If it feels concave, it's simply used up.

Well, I ran my finger over the rim and yeah, it does have a dished feel to it. The bike's supposedly 7 yrs old or so, so wear makes sense. It's just this is the first time I've ever seen something like that.

This has happened enough times (once) that I replace my rims before they start to feel dished. Some new rims come with a "wear indicator" that dissappears when the rim gets too thin.

Here in the rainy Northwest, my rims rarely last more than a year or two before needing replacment.

Yes you can put enough air in a fat tire to damage the *RIM*. Rim wear may be a factor, too; but I ruined a perfectly-good, almost-new Velocity rim by inflating my 24x2.00 tire to 90 psi. Fatter tires exert more force on the rim sidewalls.

Wow, that quick? So I hope to have a replacement tire on its way in a day or two, so it's back to the hardtail mtb in the meantime. Bleah.

Most people would consider the weight penalty of disk brakes more than worth the hassle of constant rim replacement. Of course, if you happen to get zen from spoking up wheels, that would be another story...

Remove the tire and tube as well as the rim tape. Look for cracks in the inner layer of the rim, running between the spoke holes and the tube stem hole. This is why my sun rims died. bk

I'll have to do that on the front rim, now that the rear one's toast. I need to check with the lbs that ordered me a new rim. It's the first time that I've used this shop for a Sun specific part, so this is an experiment. As for all of the local shops that say they are a recumbent dealer, they have no recumbents in stock. This one only carries a handful of the beach cruiser cf bikes.

The front wheel still has a Kenda tire, though new, so it only gets inflated to 45psi, the rear tire I had the chance to put a new Marathon tire on it, and I was happy with the tire the past 2 months.
