451mm tire recommendations?
 

Ok, I don't have a recumbent, but hear me out.

I have a mini-velo that came with 451x28 Kenda Kriterium tires on it. These aren't super-easy to find in the US and there isn't a lot of variety. Since the 451 tire size is mostly found on recumbents, I figured I would ask you guys for recommendations/thoughts.

Also, is there anything between 451x28 and 451x37? Say, a 30 or 32mm width? 28 and 37 are about the only sizes I see online.

I've never seen a 451 tire between 28mm and 37mm width- they're rare enough that more variations probably wouldn't be profitable. Too bad- I'd like to put a little fatter tire on the front of my Gold Rush.

My current favorite is the Schwalbe Durano: http://store.bikefriday.com/product_...ducts_id=13656 . Mine have lasted years without issues.

Don't know of anything in between those sizes. I've been using the IRC Roadlite 28mm tires initially on both the front and back but switched the back ones to the 37mm Primo Comet for loaded touring with the weight of my panniers on the rear rack. I second the recommendation for GreenGear as a source. Gaerlan is another option (used to be local for me but they've moved):

My V-Rex has 451 in front. When I switched from the OEM IRC to a 37x451 Comet, it improved the ride dramatically. I think they are faster, too; but that could be the placebo effect. Right now I've got a Stelvio on it. It's the first Stelvio I've ever had that lasted more than 2 months.

I get most of my tires from those 2 places. 451s and 559s in a good variety of widths.

I am curious about the Comets, they seem to be everywhere.

I have some experience with the Kenda Kwest, but in the 406x40 size on a previous bike. They might be worth another try.

What is funny is that I can not find the OE tire (Kenda Kriterium) anywhere.

Primo sells lots of tires to BMX'ers and recumbentistas, as I understand it.

Comets are great all-around tires. I've had good luck with them in both 406 and 559 sizes, Kevlar and non-Kevlar.
