Well, my major upgrade has already been made this year. I ordered a pair of wheels from Spinlite Cycling. They are Velocity Aeroheat rims, 36 spoke back and 32 spoke front. They have Velocity cartridge bearing hubs. I ordered them for their reliability and strength. I am a tourer mainly. So speed wasn't an issue.

I got mine locally. the rear a deep v 36 spoke all black with velocity hub is 159 and I am gettign a frotn wheel built with a pantour suspension hub and deep v rim. thats 259 as the hub is 159.00 I am getting radial spoke on the front. these are hand built for that price and lcoal. you can't beat it. I have had very good luck with velocity.

What model of Shimano hubs would you consider comparable to the Velocity cartridge bearing hubs?

'Just curious...I know that Chris King hubs(like their headsets) are simply awesome...but they are pricey, aren't they?

I have a wheelset that uses XT hubs, and my Velocity hubs are ligher and roll easier. Don't know how they compare to XTR, but my guess would be the Velocities would come out looking very good regardless.

Oh geez. Chris Kings are way out of my range. Well, that is out of my wife's range...of undertsanding.

I got the Velocity hubs because they are sealed cartridge bearings. They are the same hubs that come stock on the Thracians and Uriel sets.

May I ask how much you paid? This is the 26/20 set right, with a 559 rear? Hostelshoppe has them at $310 (v heaters- assuming that's the same). I'm picking up a V 2 tomorrow and that was going to be my first upgrade. But I want to keep the price down like you. I'd like to be under 300 for the set.

all the velocity rims are the same price no matter what ones you get. my 26" and 20 cost the same. I jsut got my 20 velocity deep v rim with the padtour suspension hub. my builder said he could nto do it in radial spokes. it is 36 spoke and he did 3x with all fo the spoke heds facing out. he said it could withstand anything short of a nuke blast (G) I will see if I can get a pic tomorrow.

Thanks for your comments...'sounds like the Velocity hubs are great hubs! Someday I'd like to replace the stock wheelsets on my Fusion and Stratus with Velocity sets...but, unfortunately, that'll hafta wait until after we've replaced our washer and dryer, which have been in their death throes for the past 6 months....

Hey Derek, has your wife been talking with mine?

Back when I thought that a well spec'd carbon fiber road bike would be the answer to my comfort questions, I ordered a Chris King headset for my Calfee Luna Pro. My wife thought I was nuts to order this bike...but thought I was especially nuts for buying such an expensive headset! Well, she was right about my being nuts for buying that bike...it was every bit as uncomfortable as anything else I had ever ridden!

I think you made a great choice, going with the Velocity hubs, and they're a heck of a bargain, compared to the other hubs that were available with your rims(I checked out the website of the place you ordered from)....

Here are my velocity deep v rims and hub. The front is a pantour suspension hub I just got. 36 spoke front and back because I want bullet proof. I wanted radial spokes on front but my mechanic told me it would have been a weak wheel because of the size. So it is 3 cross and he had a hell of a time building it.
