I'm thinking of getting a recumbent ...

and I see there are a miriad of types. I was wondering if you guys prefer the type that has the pedals at the same level as the chair, below or above. Are there any reasons for each type?

Best advice I can give you is talk to someone at a LBS that is a expert on 'bents, or talk to someone at a recumbent only LBS. Test ride at least 4 differant styoes and models.

I ride a Vision R40, my pedals are pretty much on the same level as the seat. But there are models where that is not the case. Just because one model is comfortable for you does not mean the next one will be.

Other things to cosider is how much and for what type of riding will you be using it for. Do you plan on doing century's and other long distance rides on it, or just riding on one of your local paved multi-use trails? You also need to ask about wheel sizes and the proper gearing for such.

I test rode all the Rans line and liked them all but preferred the swb the most where my feet are raised a bit. Go test ride, take each one out for a while then go home or out to dinner and think about it before you buy. I got heeled on my swb but soon learned to avoid that. try some hills if you can!

I currently have two SWB recumbents; A Haluzak Horizon above seat steering (ASS) (was below seat last year) and a Challenge Distance ASS.

I have ridden LWB and I felt them a little twitchy in steering at low speeds but incredibly fast and comfortable at cruising speed. Your feet are usually below your hip line while on the peddles.

The problem of having the feet at hip height or higher is that you feet do go numb after awhile do lack of circulation which does not happen in the LWB style as much. Can be darn cold on feet in winter.

There is another thing I find I suffer from is "recumbent butt' which is the bum goes numb after say 80+km. Just get off the bike and walk around to get the circulation working again helps.

If you get a chance find out if there is a group of recumbent riders around you can ride with and try out their bikes that way you can possibly save an expensive wrong purchase.
