Lightning Stealth possible purchase.........
1 Attachment(s)
Hi All, what would be a good price for a decent Lightning "Stealth"? Looks like an interesting bike.
Thanks |
The current equivalent of the Stealth is the Phantom. I'm not sure what the current MSRP is, but at a guess I'd say $2K. That places it solidly in the middle price range for bents - at the low end for Lightning but definitely not a cheap boat anchor. Lightning makes nice bikes. Since the Stealth is old enough to be discontinued, a good starting ballpark guess would be half price, or $1K.
Like with any bike, make sure it fits you. edit: the bike could be quite old, in which case you might start the bidding at closer to $400-500. See if it has a 7-speed cassette or something more updated. |
Thanks for the reply, from what I can tell it is a 1998 Stealth, 7spd. It is the XL frame with a 20in front wheel so I fit at 6'5 It cleaned up nicely for an older bike, my first SWB, very interesting feel, and I found out quick what "wheel strike" is. :~) I rode it around the shop but am looking forward to getting it out on the river trail, it feels like it would be relatively fast.
Grabbed it for $330 not too bad I guess, MSRP was $1295

Frame & Fork

Frame Construction Fillet brazed

Frame Tubing Material Chromoly

Fork Brand & Model Unspecified

Fork Material Chromoly, unicrown crown

Rear Shock Not applicable

Components

Component Group Shimano STX

Brakeset Shimano STX M-System brakes, Chang Star 257A levers

Shift Levers Grip Shift SRT-400

Front Derailleur Suntour XC Expert, bottom-pull/clamp-on 28.6mm

Rear Derailleur Shimano STX

Crankset Cyclone CPI aluminum, 24/36/50 teeth

Pedals Not included

Bottom Bracket Shimano BB-UN51, 113mm spindle

BB Shell Width 68mm English

Rear Cogs 7-speed, 11 - 28 teeth

Chain KMC SS-70S, 1/2 x 3/32"

Seatpost Not applicable

Saddle Recumbent mesh seat

Handlebar Lightning

Handlebar Extensions Not applicable

Handlebar Stem Lightning

Headset 1" YST 8002

Wheels

Hubs Front: Shimano Alivio, Rear: Shimano AceraX

Rims Sun Rims CR16, 36-hole

Tires Front: 16 x 1 3/8" Primo HP, Rear: 26 x 1.50" Specialized Fat Boy

Spoke Brand Sapim stainless steel, 2.0mm straight gauge

Spoke Nipples Brass nipples

|
If the frame is solid and fits you, you didn't do bad at all. Let us know how it goes (and you need to post pictures now that it's yours, or it never happened. :) ).

I did get it, it cleaned up well, new tires, tubes, a bath, lots of adjustment and cleaned the 40ft chain! One thing I like is there is room for really wide tires, I might try some Schwalbe 20x2.0 front and 26x2.35 on the rear, a little cushier ride @ 25 to 55psi, but I will try the 100psi Kenda kwests that are there now to see if it is fast at all. Thanks.

Wow, that must have been sitting in a basement for a decade! Barely looks used at all! Why do you think you need grossly-fat tires? You've got a mesh seat with a cushion besides. It's not going to beat you up.

Judging by the pics - What a Deal!
I've never felt the need to use tires larger than 1.50" on my 'bents. One of my bikes rolls on 1.25" tires. Unless you are very large, less than maximum pressure should work well and give a comfy ride. Are those the 1.5" version of Kenda Kwest? They also make that in 1.25". |

Lots of variables - very different than setting up an upright bike!
You're heavier/taller than me and 1.5 might indeed be as narrow as you should go, or at least see how the current tires work for you. |
