They're learning that they can't do me in on flat ground; so they adopted a new strategy on Monday: hill intervals. I hate hills! They picked the nastiest hill in the area, and did it 3 times. When the route was announced, half of the group chickened out and rode in the other direction. I hit my MHR the first time up, then discovered new beats I didn't know I had on the other two. They finally gapped me on the last climb, then took off for home at 25 mph. They didn't gap me by enough, though; I was doing 31 when I repassed them.

I don't think I ever posted a pic of last year's addition to my bike barn. This is the roadie-killer.

BlazingPedals: You have too many toys

Or put another way, you win!

When riding with the uprights, how do your V-Rex, M5, and NoCom compare? Is one better on a flat ride? Is one better on a rollers ride? I am curious since I have a V-Rex. Congrats on the new additions.

The V-Rex does fine with the 16-17 mph group. Hills are a bit tough, but that crowd doesn't attack much anyway. Primary mission: easy rides with the 'C' group, short recovery rides around the neighborhood.

The Baron, obviously, is faster than the V-Rex. It does great on flats and headwinds; but it needs to be spun, not pushed, on hills; more so than any of my other bikes. It's much better than the Nocom when the grade goes into double digits, my speed drops below 4 mph, and I may need large front wheel movements to maintain balance. Also, it has 'fatter' tires, to be better able to take rough roads. Primary mission: moderately fast rides near home, also very hilly rides (a.k.a. Hilly Hundred.)

The Nocom is just scary-fast. I can crank it up to 30 mph almost at will to pass uprights (on flat ground) and it climbs moderate grades pretty well too because the boom is noticeably stiffer than the Baron. But if I'm going 2.5 mph and I need to turn the wheel, it hits the chain and I stop RIGHT NOW. Primary mission: riding with Lowracer1 or other lowracers, doing races, and riding with the uber-hammers (cat 3/2 training rides.)

The M5 seems to be a match for my Baron on flat ground. On the 5 and 6% grades around my house, it is noticeably faster than even the Nocom. As you might expect, it's slower than the Nocom on flat ground or into the wind, though. It's still a little bit low for uprights to draft me, but I get a better draft from them! And, at least I'm up high enough that they can talk to me without having to look straigh down. Primary mission: weekend rides with the 20 mph group.

To answer Dennis, I bought it used from one of the Springfield OH guys. I think Gary was the original importer, but AFAIK M5 will sell direct if you're willing to be your own importer.

Elad63 (and Dennis), the neckrest is flat plastic with a piece of pvc pipe screwed to the end. Its attached to the seat with velcro, behind the seat pad. The pvc pipe is padded with a layer of open-cell foam, held on with a few wraps of electrical tape, and is covered with the toe end of a sock. Very low-tech, but seems to work OK until I get something more refined. Unfortunately, the seat pad was hacked to make room for the neck rest, so the proper fix will involve a new pad.
