exactly how is this recumbent steered? I'm guessing it is some kind of pulley system (look at his left hand). Why is there a stem on this "bike"? Is there an alternate way to steer, can you hook handlebars onto the stem? How accurate is the steering.

Linkage steering. Kind of like an extra long screw rod attached to the handlebars and a lockring on the fork tube. You will never find linkage steering on the bikes Lance rides.

See those folks in the background? Those are the DF people that some recumbent folks prey on at century rides and tours. Some sassy recumbent youngsters pretend to be sharks and then blast by them on "low race" style recumbents. Afterwards the sassy club brags about "smoking roadies" on the net.

Very accurate. The only problem is when the linkage bolts loosen the bike wiggles all over the road and crashes. But if you land on a sack of PBJs when you fall there is no road rash. That is one of the reasons why I load my velomobile with PBJs. I can crash into any damn thing out there with PBJ protection and get up to walk home.

If you look real close, you can see the linkage at the fork; then you follow it back to where he is steering. You can not actually see it very good in this picture but think of your car steering linkage.. peace

That fellow most likely ate his PBJs at the rest stop.

With all the calories from a PBJ that fellow can walk up any hill with a heavy recumbent. Sugar is good and keeps a fellow peppy.

A lot of recumbent riders are portly, big or chubby in the 180 pound and above range. Too heavy to race like young whipper snappers on the Tour. Big folks will be healthy if they ride and that is OK. I know that a lot of sassy recumbent youngsters who brag about "smoking roadies" and they have have huge tubby pot bellies like me. Those fellows are smoking something and it is not roadies. What the heck we are all getting older with our spare tire full of celluloid.

That will make for a very long reach. Recumbent folk like the laid back easy lifestyle. No need to strain reaching for a handlebar.

yesiree mR. Mcdoogle.How old are ya spuds, Im 73 yrs young.I enhjoy the recumbent. My son in law made me a homebuilt 9 years ago and I havent look back since.Not sure about PBJS but a fitness freak no way.I still like my captain Tartikoff pipe tobaco and I keep a jar of Clausen dill pickles in my tailbox, along with a 6pack of Schlitz (for hydrating purposes only of course).

Recumbents will simply tip over if you try goin up a hill.I have learned that several times the hard way.and sure most recumbent fellas are chubby, but why not they aent hurting you spud.

I like taking a rest every few miles under the shade tree. light my pipe and pop a cold one.I even have an inclination to make a velo-hammock that works well for taking naps.That kid Armstrong made this whole country proud and he fought back, more power to him.

Ill try and post again, but my old lady caught me looking at pictures last week so now she keeps me off the intarnet.

I hope they weren't pictures of portly chaps on a trike.....

It's the pivot for the front fork and it is probaly extended to allow a light to be fitted.
Some tadpole trikes use a related steering setup with crossed linkages, very fast, precise, reliable and smooth.
