A folding recumbent?

Notices
Recumbent What IS that thing?! Recumbents may be odd looking, but they have many advantages over a "wedgie" bicycle. Discuss the in's and out's recumbent lifestyle in the recumbent forum.

A folding recumbent?

It shouldn't be that difficult to create a folding recumbent. What are the best ones?

Most recumbents look like they're $1k and up. What are the best providers? Do most people just build their own?

Vast majority of recumbent bikes come from recumbent manufacturers. I have three RANS bikes. RANS is a major manufacturer in a very small market.

There are folding trikes but I can't recall reading about a 2-wheeled folding recumbent. Yes, there are folks who build their own recumbents with varying success. I have a friend who built a long wheelbase recumbent only to have it hang in the garage for most of the last decade while he rode bikes and trikes that he bought from regular manufacturers. He used a kit from a Seattle company (no longer in business) and parts from two "donor bikes". The major manufacturers spend considerable time and money on engineering (if they are successful builders and want to stay in business) to make a bike or trike that handles well. Some home builts are just as good but some can be nightmares to ride if the steering geometry is bad.

Take a look at the homebuilder's section of the messageboard on 'BentRider Online. You can find a lot of information there.

You can add a Cruzbike conversion kit to a folding bike:Introducing the Cruzigami Mantis - BentRider Online Forums
Not the smallest fold, but small enough to get on the train during rush hour.

Of course there's also the Easy Racers Fold Rush, the Linear Folding 2.0 LWB Recumbent Bicycle, the Yanko Grasshopper, and the AZUB Origami, not to mention the various folding trikes.

There's also the old Bike Friday SatRday, although like the rest of their bikes, it's more of a packable bike than a foldable one.
