Feeling Guilty About n+1

Recently bought a new DF carbon road bike, already have a 1 year old 29-r mtb and though my wife is not one who would ever begrudge me for spending on myself, I was feeling a bit guilty about the recent purchase when I have been preaching the need for austerity in our spending. Sooo, kind of on impulse I put the Giro ATT on Craigslist. It was on there for a few weeks and then the next thing I know a nice gentlemen is driving away with it in the back of his PU truck.

I regret losing my two-wheeled friend but but in all reality I can only ride so many bikes and the $950 I got for it made me feel a bit better about the spend on the new DF. I will always be a 'bent fan but am changing course for now.

I did more lurking than posting in the Recumbent section of BikeForums. So though you have not seen much evidence of my presence here I want to thank many of you for educating and entertaining me during my time here. I'll be in the MTB and Road sections...

Unless it was beat-up - which I doubt - the gentleman who drove away with your Giro ATT got a good deal.

I think so too. New tires, bottle mounts, Bacchetta trunk, Cateye LED tail light, Cateye wired computer.

IMO there is nothing bad about having more than one bike. It kinda like having the right tool for the job at hand.
I for instance am into recumbents. I have a LWB bent and a trike. That way I do have the right tool for the ride at hand. The bike goes out on the hi-ways, and the trike on bike trails around town.

I have learned to live with the "guilt...." Just like there are "horses for courses," different bikes work better for varying rides.

Recently my wife spent a weed in Florida with her daughter. I left her at the airport at 6am and by noon I had bought my first recumbent on eBay. That was some weeks ago and I am still not forgiven but the fun I have had had washed away the guilt long ago!

Guilt is an emotion that doesn't belong anywhere near a possible n+1 bike purchase. It's completely useless in this situation, and NEVER leads to taking any meaningful action, such as a purchase. Desire is the appropriate emotional state for any n+1 thoughts. So, if you want to get anything done, go with desire. It works every time.

Members of the cycling community will be much happier once they incorporate this simple truth into their lives. The key thing here is to let your wife/gf bring up the guilt after the purchase has been completed. Then, it's too late for the guilt to screw anything up.

I can only ride one bike at a time, but having lots of bikes lets me distribute the wear-and-tear so that they all last longer.
