Boston to Providence race/ride

ok, I'm not in charge of this **** or anything but I'm starting this thread because this ride keeps getting talked about in the Boston Ride and Boston Halloween thread so I'll move the conversation here....

I think someone else said it's 49 miles? and there is a bus or commuter rail you can take back? Whatever.. sounds fun

By the way I'm in... sound off if you are also...

oh and..
BEER...

Caraxmarie 11-01-06 10:14 AM

Scott is getting me a checkered flag for the start.

scotthorrigan 11-01-06 10:18 AM

Thanks Morgie...
i've been meaning to do this, but obviously, i'm too lazy

i'll get all the details up in a few

Pretty excited about a race where all I have to do is pedal. Count me in for the 19th. If i ride my geared bike, I'll try riding back too.

Last night really proved I lack the ability to pedal and think at the same time.

estimated miles: 45
estimated time: 4-5 hours

Date: Sunday the 19th. Time TBD

Starting line: not sure where i'd like to start it but I was thinking brookline village, or somewhere around there. I though about starting it downtown but i figured that this race is long enough.

Finish Line: not sure of this either. I figure we could end it at india point park or maybe a bar.

route: Left on to Boylston st. Right onto Jamaciawa. Follow Jamaciaway to the first rotory and turn onto Arborway. Follow Arborway to next rotory and turn on to Centre St. Follow Centre st past next rotory. Centre St becomes Grove St. Take a Right onto Washinton St. Follow Washington to Providence Highway Rt 1. Providence Highway becomes Washinton St Rt 1. Washington St becomes N. Washington St Rt 1 ends. N. Washington becomes S. Washington Rt. 1 begins again. S. Washington becomes Washington St. Washington St becomes Broadway. Broadway becomes Main st Rt 1. (go over bridge) Left onto Park Pl Rt 1. Park Pl becomes George St Rt 1. Stay on George St (on left) Rt 1 ends. George St becomes East St. East St becomes Hope St. Left onto Wickenden St. Right on to Gano st. end at india point park.

the directions will defenetly change.

bring plenty of water and snacks.

maybe we'll set up a rest stop along the way, I can have my job (WBCN) drive down there and set up a table with free snacks and drinks and play some tunes in some parking lot.

Regestration Fee: since there will probably only be a small amount of you entering and i'm sure everyone would like to see a big cash prize so we'll have to chage $10 to enter.

umm.. anything else?

rookiemon 11-01-06 01:13 PM

this really better happen. also, anyone riding for 5 hours better make it to conneticut.

scotthorrigan 11-01-06 03:50 PM

plus sunday morning traffic will be minimal which is why i originally chose this date

is there anyone who CAN'T do sunday?

Morgie 11-01-06 05:22 PM

eh, I can do sunday... would perfer sat. but it seems like I'm out voted, and plus your right about traffic.. so sunday is alright

scotthorrigan 11-01-06 05:31 PM

srcurran 11-01-06 05:36 PM

actually... are any of you folks doing it as a ride more so than to race? I'm down either way, I just am not going to break myself trying to race 40 miles.

scotthorrigan 11-01-06 06:00 PM

not that this has anything to do with the ride.... but....

scotthorrigan 11-01-06 06:25 PM

nah dude. he came into my work (wbcn) to do an interview and I just chilled in the studio got to hang with him for a while.

it was funny when he first came into the building, i turned the corner and i ****ing see flavor flav standing in front of me... and i got all excited and was like "WHAT UP CUZ!" and he replied with "WHAAA, WHAT UP MONEY!" it was amazing.

plus he was the nicest dude i've ever met.

AND he was wearing a viagra racing jacket hahaha

Morgie 11-01-06 06:27 PM

Rode it today...

I am envious that I will be out of state November 19, so I rode to Providence today. Will give the report here. My two cents: Why are you racing it? Would be nice to get a few pacelines going and suffer through it together.

The good:
Easy to follow, don't need to pull map out at all
Great pavement once you get out of Boston
Wide breakdown lane with no glass, dirt, trash, etc.
Favorable wind (today)
Flat with a few long, low grades (nothing steep for the fixies)

The bad:
Could be some nasty winds
Cars/trucks are fast and are right on the white line
Riding out Jamaicaway and getting to 1 is nasty

The ugly:
This is truly the ugliest ride aesthetically that I have ever done. There is a fun novelty of riding to another state, but the scenery is just heinous the entire way. Had to have been 25 Dunkin Donuts and 20McDonald's.

Miscellaneous: I clocked 56 miles from Medford. Took 3 hours on the dot, which included two 5 minute breaks. Don't want to knock anybody, but no reason for it to take 5 hours. Was going to ride home, but spent the afternoon with a friend and took the commuter rail back. No questions asked about the bike, only cost $6 and took about 70 minutes. I'd recommend the train- I've had to get pretty desperate and fake Tourette's tics for sympathy (shameful, I know) with the bus people before. Never get asked twice with trains.

Enjoy it, but Route 1 is sh*t.

scotthorrigan 11-01-06 06:57 PM

so sunday morning should be a little easier hoping the winds are low.

all in all it'll still be a good time.

Thanks for the info epic.

I dunno about everyone else but I'm not approaching it with the full on race mentality... I think in a 45+ mile ride people will end up riding in lines etc... I'm just going to try'n get there in a decent time and have a good time...

we could just sprint it out at the end and all ride together

Morgie 11-01-06 07:15 PM

I have no doubt there will be some sprinting in the end...
