Rocky V - June 23rd Philly annual two person relay race
Yup it is after the new year and I am starting to get folks to think about Rocky V. The past two years this two person relay alleycat has been talk of the town. This is the hardest race that philly gives you every year. In the past there has been up to 35 or so teams battling out for who are the best team for 2 hours or more...
Here is the premise of the race. You have a team that consist of a runner and a sprinter. The sprinter will first start at the bottom of the art museum steps. They will then run up the steps to get their first package. They then go run down the steps and get on their bike and sprint to love park.
At this point they hand off their package to the runner of the team. The runner then goes and does the task they have to do. While the runner sprints back to the Art Museum Steps to get the next package. You can only have one package on you at a time. Hence why this race is one of the hardest of all philly races.
After you complete all the tasks for the race. The sprinter and runner then do a time trial from Love Park to Lemon Hill in Fairmount Park. After that we have a bunch of free beer and free bbq for both meat eaters and vegetarians.
In the past we have had sponsorships from the likes of R.E. Load, Chrome Bags, Bell's Bikes, Red Bull, MessNYC.net, Harolet Clothing, King Kog, Trackstar nyc, PABST, Outlaw printing, Jumpstart Printing (under a different name now) Stuart Leon, and many more. This year there will be hopefully more and more new sponsors.
Ok I like I said I wanted to get folks thinking about this. The date again is June 23rd. 2pm registration Art Museum Steps. $20 bucks for team. All proceeds go to the Philadelphia Bicycle Messenger Association. Last year we raised like 300 or so for the NACCC here in philly...

not the flyer. print liberation will be doing one in the near future..

Last year sprinters were picking up multiple packages at a time. Are measures going to be put in place to prevent this this year? Also, if unmanned checkpoints are necessary I'd suggest not making it things that anyone with basic knowledge of the city would know without going to the spot (i.e. Giordano's).

what do you mean multiple packages at a time? were folks giving sprinters more then one package up on the steps? I will have folks regulate more this year. I also hear what you are saying about giordano's. this year the race is going to be alot harder...

I was one of those people. Sorry. I misunderstood the process of getting the packages, and no one was able to explain it to me clearly. I sprinted for a package, took it to Love Park, then went back to get another if my teammate was going on a long leg. Only after the race did I get a straight answer, and in asking around I found several teams who were operating as we were. It didn't help us finish higher than 14th, so I hope I didn't steal anyone's thunder.

here is the premise of the sprinters job. The sprinter runs up and down the steps then rides to love park to hand off the package. Once the sprinter gives the runner a job. The sprinter then can go back to the steps to get the next package. Then he/she rides to love park and waits to get the complete job and hands off the new job to the runner...
I hope that clears up folks questions..
Jacobs Bicycles just got added on to the list of sponsors.. First place track team will get 2 tracks forks!!!

Either way, I know that the top 2-3 teams wouldn't have bothered cheating, cause they coulda won anyways, and that none of the out of town teams cheated, cause then they would have beaten my ass.

I can think of a few ways it could have helped people, but it's not worth going into. I'm looking forward to the race, of course. Last year was a blast. I hope Ricky brings out NBW kids again this year.

it's a tough call. My buddy is doing the tri with me so, I would imagine that we would be the 2 man team so one of us would be getting screwed. GUess I will probably just spectate to save myself for sunday and because I don't know if I would want to do it on my fancy pants road bike.

sprinters definitely were going back to the art museum multiple times if their runners were out for a long time then giving the runners more than one job at a time. i was just hanging out at love park watching (my partner flaked at the last minute) but i don't know how the signatures worked if the runner brought up more that one. maybe there was no real cheating. it's not like anybody has a chance against the normal winners anyway...
one thing i thought of was maybe it could be set up so that the runner and sprinter somehow traded off duties. i know the runners were dead by the end of the race and the sprinters spent a lot of time sitting around at love park.

I can see what you all are saying about not being even. I am trying to get it this year so it isn't that uneven. Either way I am not thinking of changing the setup for this race...
