the rochester (ny) thread.

dear rochester,
(I am in Boston now, but I will be returning in early March to finish up at RIT.)

When I return I have some plans:
-week night bar (javas, ice cream, etc) ride.
-weekend distance ride (30-40 miles, probably is going to be more for road bikes)
-an alley cat (or kitten) in the late spring, I think we could get a lot of upstate out for this.

I was in rochester this last weekend and talked to as many kids as I could about this, and I recieved a lot of good responses. I am now reaching out to the bike internet to see if anyone is out here. (fix?)

All I know is that I certainly am not going to waste a perfectly good spring by not riding every moment I can. So expect good stuff to be coming soon.
love,sean

Rochester does have it!

Suggestions

Rochester Bicycling Club (I'm the Publicity Director) - we have over 350 rides/season - just got finished with the 2007 calendar (not on the website yet - will be in a couple of weeks) - there are rides every day of the week - with multiple rides of all calibers on the weekends. Check out 2006 for an example. (only members can go to the maps - but all rides are open to the public - just call the ride captain - number is provided - for starting place and time). But the $20 to join comes with the full package - plus discounts at the many LBS. I usually get my $20 back in the first few months of the year hehe

Tuesday Night Urban Assault

Led by Scott Page of Full Moon Vista. Leaves Adams Street Center/Corn Hill at 6 pm (sharp). Rides are from October - March. Snow on the ground - look for off-road fun. Most people are on a cross or mtb (I'm on mtb). Many people attending (we can go from 18-75 riders) are off-season racers from the GVCC - but with lots of others who ride year round (like me). Can be a fast group - but the great advantage is it's like having a coach because we're also doing specific training moves --- and may have some coaching encouragement ... "ALRIGHT, EVERYONE OFF THEIR SADDLES, WE'RE DOING FIVE LOOPS OF THIS HILL". Hehe and you move your butt! Need at least a tail light.

Now for something completely different ...

Tour de Bar

Fun group - leaves Cobb Hill at 10 pm - mtb is bike of choice as it can be on or off road --- suburban mountainbiking at it's best. No specific ride or point of destination - that's a mutual decision. First ride is going down the face of Cobb Hill grass and on from there - rides can go through Highland Park, the massive windy sidewalks of UofR, bike path, parking garages (fun) and sometimes I have no idea - just follow the leader through the woods. We do stop for beverages. Front and Back lights are wise.

Also they've just connected a trail so you can go from Rochester to Charlotte via path (although you do have a jog by Holy Sepulchre Cemetery on Lake Avenue ---- part they built up takes you down by the river where you have nearly a mile of bridge over the water that leads up to Charlotte. It's already very busy - and should be nice in the Spring.

Hope this helps!

Thanks.

I actually had heard of the tour de bar and the urban assault, I just never attended because I only have a track bike and a road bike, neither are well suited to doing mountain bike-y things.

I will look into the club rides in lieu of weekend rides (I was intialy trying to continue rides that started at RIT last year). But I still think a street version of the tour de bar, would actually be a nice compliment as I prefer more to ride on roads than off roads or on trails.

But thanks a lot for the information.
