Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill Riders?

Any singlespeed/fixed gear riders out there from the Triangle area? Just wondering cause I just moved out here and find it hard enough getting around on my early 80's 6 speed Bianchi...Couldn't imagine riding around single with a the hills...

I live in Greensboro. It's a little less hilly here.

I'm from Durham but living in chicago. You see a good few fixies around 9th street and duke campus. Don't know how, but I've seen at least one guy getting around Durham brakeless. Yikes

I'm in Raleigh and recently bought a fixed. Raleigh's pretty flat, although there's a 2 mile hill at each end of my commute route that's a little tough to climb and I spin out going down. Still experimenting with the gears.

It was 48/20 when I bought it. I've since gone to 48/18, then 48/17. On a non-windy day I could probably drop to 16. I did about 20 miles today to the gym and back and the wind in my face on the hills had me struggling a little bit.

Unfortunately, I'm stuck out in the suburbs for now. Prettymuch the only cyclists I see are parents out with their kids in the neighborhood. I think I've seen three or four commuters ever, and only one of them more than once. I know all the roadies are out in the country around Falls Lake, but I haven't been into that kind of riding lately.

I live in Garner and ride there and in raleigh...I commute occasionally + ride for fun. One of my favorite urban loops goes from downtown up to north hills and back, it's hilly but manageable @ 48/17. Take st. mary's st. to lassiter mill, either climb lassiter mill up to north hills (long & grindy) or go left on scotland and make your way through old-raleigh neighborhoods up to north hills.

I have friends in Chapel Hill, Hillsborough, and Durham and visit them all the time. It has never seemed that hilly to me, but maybe I just haven't seen enough of the area. And, I've never biked there, just been driven around, so maybe I have an unreal perception of things. I have a friend who would like to ride more there, but the road system can make it tough to get places, with the many busy freeway-style roads.

I ride 48/16 in Raleigh... It's fairly hilly on my side of town (NCSU area) but certainly manageable.

Any of you locals want to get together for a ride sometime in the near future? I don't have many (well, any) cycling buds around here...

I refuse to let this thread die. Come on RDU people... group ride sometime in the future? Or just meet at a bar somewhere and shoot the breeze?
