the boston scumbag cup! - 9.8.07-9.10.07

WEBSITE (not really there yet, but it will be): www.scumbagcupboston.com
this is an idea i've been throwing around for a long time now, so i'm incredibly excited about what's going to happen in september!
6 races in 2 days (the last day is dedicated solely to drinking/partying - maybe we'll play polo. this is boston.). saturday will have 5 qualifiers, all different types of races (time trial, work simulation race, criterium, alleycat, scavenger hunt, or something like those). each of these races is being put on by a different rider who has organized successful events in the past. so far signed on we have myself, croth of the strangers, and the boston burnouts throwing down for ya'll.
you get points for entering a qualifier, and the top 5 get more points depending on their placing. there might also be ways to earn extra points in the races.
sunday is the main race. a "circuit race" with 5-6 checkpoints, making about a 7 mile loop. you'll have to run the loop 4 times. in order to enter the race sunday you will need to accumulate a certain number of points.
it'll basically work out that you have to either do really well in a race, or enter 4 out of the 5 qualifiers in order to race sunday.
prizes for the overall points winners, as well as the winners of each qualifier and the main race.
the overall points winner will probably have a bit more honest representation of all the different facets a messenger must have in order to really be called the winner.
i enjoy closed course championship style races. this isn't one. no streets will be closed, no city officials will be notified. the reason i called it the "scumbag cup" is to try and keep it as far from being "legitimate" as possible.
it'll be a huge party, come on out! sponsors and more info will be posted as the info floats in.
my extremely lofty goal/idea is also to have another city host this next year, so if that interests you, get in touch.

I've never been to Boston and I think it's time to visit a la alleycat style.
Just to make sure, do you have to ride fixed to race?

All bikes welcome.
Rob, we'll talk.
I'm trying to encourage out of towners to come, and we'll take care of as many housing requests as we can (first come first served!)
email them to me from the links on my website: scumbagcupboston.com

Darnit. Don't expect any Atlanta folk. That was the one weekend we could figure worked for the 24 hour race.

The points system hasn't been finalized yet, but yes, you still need to qualify.
You will be able to qualify without actually winning any of the races as long as you finish 3. I'm not trying to stop anyone from racing on Sunday, I just want to give you incentive to race harder on Saturday.

a few updates as well:
here's how i'd do the main race : https://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1218470
i also secured some cash sponsorships, so it looks like registration fees will drop AND the winer of the drinking contest will still get $1000. yeah! anyone who already reg'd will get a refund for the difference. specifics on this will be announced later this week!

how'd the whole thing go-off?
I did the crazy 888s years ago, sadly it was my one and only alleycat. It was crazy fun (despite riding with borrowed monster clips that made me almost crash every time I tried to turn as I'd broken a clipless the night before)...
