Hello World,
This update is to let you know about some of the work that's been done since the last update, provide some of the same info in case you didn't get it and to remind you that Early Registration is going to close (again) on April 20th so after that date the price of registration will go up! If you haven't registered, now is the time! If you have registered but have not paid then now is the time to pay in order to get that early bird discount!
So let's begin with Registration. There are currently 232 registered participants, plus 3 guys who paid but don't want to register yet because they don't want you to know they are racing and will kick your butts. OhhhhKay...here's to the Mystery Messengers haha, so it's 235 registeredish participants as of 10am today.
Our registration official is taking a much needed rest, but do not despair that she will not return until the 21st. If you require special payment instructions or accommodation simply submit your request to registration@cmwc2008.com before midnight 4-20-08 and you will still be "early".
If you are paying by Paypal but do not want to register again to get to the Registration Paypal Button you can simply send your payment via Paypal to registration@cmwc2008.com Please be sure to include the full name of the registration(s) you are paying for as they appear in the registrant rolls.
Or simply use this link to use a Paypal Button, again, be certain to include the NAME of the registration you are paying for.

Main Race
The Main Race Coordinator, Mark Hayward reports that planning of the main race is going well. Currently the manifest system developed will have you Qualifying in as little as 45 minutes or as long as 1 hr 15 minutes but I'm certain I can do it even more slowly than all that. As for the Final on Sunday, expect a grueling 4 hour race on our 6 kilometer track (includes bi-directional traffic as x2, actual paved roads total 3 kilometers). The Main Race coordination team includes among others Snoopy, Givago, Bob & Martin from Copenhagen. They've worked out many of the salient details and our first test of the manifest system is scheduled for April 27th on the actual site with 40-50 volunteers. These tests give no advantage and most volunteers will be working not racing anyway. Email mainrace@cmwc2008.com
Music CMWC + NXNE, it's official
Music is a big part of CMWC this year. We are very pleased to announce that there will be almost 16 hours of programming on the Island Stage. The highlight of the CMWC musical program is certain to be on Saturday Night when the Island Stage becomes an Official NXNE Stage to entertain you lucky people at CMWC! From 5pm to 10pm you'll be treated to 5 of the best shows at one of the largest music festivals there is! This collaboration with NXNE is something new, exciting and one of a kind! We'll be selecting from the over 500 bands slated to play NXNE and we've got a great draw for these talented musicians as our Island Stage will be the largest show of the NXNE Festival!
Yes, it is good fortune that has CMWC & NXNE together near the same dates, during the entire week leading up to CMWC those that arrive early will have endless selection of live music club shows every night featuring musicians & vocalists in bands from all around the world!
During the day Saturday in the day and through the evening, and Sunday until late afternoon the Island stage will be alive with DJ's, MC's, performers, bands and anything else that makes sound. When you aren't racing, playing u-lock horseshoes, bike polo or hanging out on the nude beach or in the beer gardens or whatever wander over to the stage and enjoy some first rate performances. Email music@cmwc2008.com
World Welcome Party
Friday the 13th after the group ride you will want to head toward the tallest thing in North America, it calls to you as a beacon, we didn't want anyone to claim they couldn't find the place so we put up the biggest landmark around, the CN Tower, to help you find your way. At its base you will find a massive Brewery, and inside this massive brewery you will find a beautiful party space where the pipes run not with water but with beer, where the music plays and the roller races roll, where hundreds and hundreds of your friends will be, where you'll be shown the respect you deserve for a job well done.
Come then to Steam Whistle Brewing "The Roundhouse" and have the best Friday the 13th ever. Music, free beer & food all night in a first rate accommodation, the best Toronto has to offer. Thanks to our friends at Steam Whistle Brewing and the CMWC crew.
Sprints & Skids
On our Island we have almost everything we need. However the one thing we don't have is 500 meters of straight, perfect roadway for sprints and skids. These 2 events will take place elsewhere, this location is the only one that isn't entirely secured and we're still working on it. If we get what we want for you, the Sprints and Skids will be a glorious set of events. If we can't get that, the fallback position that is also being planned alongside our first choice of venues is just as grand and may include a brewery....
Our first choice is the one we want for you though, and it too will have a beer garden should we secure it for these events. We're told the impending arrival of a "head of state" may interfere with our plans but we're shouldering our way in there anyway, as far as we're concerned no "head of state" outranks our world community at its 16th global event in the city of diversity, so they'd better move aside and pick a different date. They probably will too.
But if not, permits are ready to host these events in an impressive location literally 2 minutes from the mainland ferry docks.
Bike Polo
There are currently of all our registrants 55 registered bike polo participants. That's 18.3 teams, so this is lining up to be the largest polo tournament to date, ever. If interest in polo continues apace and one quarter of the total CMWC participants register for the polo tourney we could see that number tripling plus, hopefully reaching the absolute cap of 64 teams! Wow! If we count the team names of all the registered Bike Polo Teams we already know that 30+ teams are registered, just not all members of each team! Wow! Email bikepolo@cmwc2008.com
Art Gallery
34 CMWC registrants have indicated they would like to display something they've created at the CMWC gallery. We do have the space as long as you don't go nuts with big installations or something. Most of these registrants are sending or bringing paintings, photography or small sculpture and are responsible for shipping art to CMWC so we're not too worried about it. As it stands we have a lovely private gallery available to us and for you to visit when you come to CMWC. Email thearts@cmwc2008.com
Housing
Shane Murphy our Housing Coordinator is working hard to get discounted accommodation at many local hostels, hotels and motels. We're all still seeking a Camp Courier location and soliciting billeting space from within the Toronto messenger community. If you're on a budget or simply want to have a good time hanging with people we should be able to hook you up. Let Shane know what you need at the address below, remember folks he's busy so be patient with the reply.
housing@cmwc2008.com
Volunteers
Yes, we do want more volunteers. There is always something to do right up to the day and even afterward. Thank you, Thank You to the many who have already registered to help with the Island Clean-up on Monday, over 30 people have already signed up to put the place back into pristine condition when we're done with it.
Contact volunteers@cmwc2008.com
Open Forums
The place to be Friday afternoon and Monday morning. The CMWC is providing a large space suitable to accommodating large meetings including a PA system. At this time we're planning to have snacks and refreshments available at the Friday meeting and a breakfast available at the Monday meeting.
Remember that if you would like to put a topic onto the agenda for Open Forum you must email council at council@messengers.org
Market Fair
Currently there will be 20 tents of vendors, technology booths and non-profits at the CMWC Market Fair. We expect that number to double.
Non-profits, the CMWC is providing a limited number of spaces -free- of any charge to non-profits that fit well with CMWC. It wouldn't be as fun if they were all businesses even though many are dear to us. So when you're shopping around for something to take home be sure and give these people a listen. There will be some you know and some you don't, everyone will be looking to make new friends and exchange ideas on how to make things better, surrounded by cool stuff to look at or buy. Market Fair will be a blast! There is still space available, so contact us if your large, medium or small business is interested in having a space at CMWC. It's a great way to let the whole world of messengers see what you've got to offer and it helps us put on a great CMWC. Thanks a million to the businesses already present in Market Fair!
vendors@cmwc2008.com
Beer
Two, not one, but two beer gardens on the Island with us. A big one near to the stage, polo, market and main race action and a smaller one a bit away for a peaceful cold one.
----------------------
General
Ferry Service - Watch in the near future for updated information on the schedule to be run to accommodate CMWC. If you registered and paid to be at at CMWC you don't need to pay for the ferry, so be sure to read anything we send you about ferry service and listen to the registration check-in personnel. They will tag you in some manner that lets you on and of the Island for free on Saturday and Sunday.
CMWC schwag is enroute. Jerseys, patches, t-shirts will be available at the webstore soon along with some more unique items we're collecting or creating locally for you at CMWC and the CMWC webstore. Registered participants get a nice discount on a sweet high-end Louis Garneau jersey, and anyone that pre-orders and pre-pays for their CMWC jersey will be rewarded with a great price on a great jersey. Check the CMWC webstore this coming week for a peek at the proofs on our jerseys currently being produced. They are uber-sweet!
Note: We don't want to piss you off, so we're telling you now there will be a patch in your registered racer packet. So don't buy one unless you want one before CMWC or you want more than one. Things are going well, you'll likely have an official T-shirt in there too, we're trying!
Messengers are very green, we do work that helps everyone, even the people that don't like bicycles and messengers and fun. In the spirit of caring for the environment by changing our habits to have less of an individual impact the CMWC 2008 has a few standards it will set and will abide by.
Plastic-Bag free event. -- We aren't entering the debate, we're doing this and that's it. Our vendors will not have plastic bags for your purchase no matter what it is. You all have messenger bags anyway and every registered racer packet comes in a cloth bag provided by our fabulous soft-goods sponsor Louis Garneau Sports! We'll also have some of these available cheap to buy from the CMWC booth.
Bottled Water - It's quite simple, there won't be any. None. Bring your water bottle because there is plenty of water! Our site has spread at even intervals many many water fountains & spigots. These are being supplemented by our Water Truck, strategically placed near the center of the action, which will let many people fill their bottles at once with it's many spigots. Thanks the the City of Toronto for providing our water truck free of charge via their "HTO" branch! Water bottles will be available for purchase at several booths, but bring one anyway. The water is free & clean, just the way it should be.
Recycling - There will be recycling bins all over the place alongside waste bins. If you aren't bright enough to know which is which well the recycling ones are probably bright blue. If you don't know what goes in what just ask! Most people know... right? Right. It's easy so do it.
Website - In case you hadn't noticed, the CMWC website changes almost daily, so be sure to check in, and visit our sponsors too! You and the sponsors are how this came to be, Toronto messengers are working hard to be the best hosts, but we couldn't do it without you and it'd be much harder without our cool sponsors. The sponsors you see are not just providing some schwag to have their logo up at CMWC. If you see a logo up the sponsor has given some schwag but also written a check or helped with a major expense with direct financial support to help us along. You deserve it too.
This CMWC is going to be a very good time in a very nice place where we've worked hard to insure you receive the respect you deserve. You'll make new friends, see your old buddies and all at what will seem a continuos whirlwind of parties and events. Register now!
Thank you, from the CMWC crew in Toronto.

Really like the sound of the efforts and initiatives you're all doing surrounding the CMWC, too - no plastic bags, no bottled water, recycling = great effort - thank you so far! Looking forward to it a lot.
Cheers Sam & gang!

"Honestly, officer. I just bough the tent and wanted to see how it looked all put together. I guess it was harder work than I thought, I must have passed out. Clearly, some helpful but mis-guided passer-by saw me and tucked me into my sleeping bag and zipped up the tent. Obviously they didn't know or didn't care about the by-law forbidding camping on the island. That is the person you should be looking for."
