In other news, did my second day of volunteering yesterday at bike pirates and learned how to remove a stuck quill stem using a vice and a 2 by 4. Getting to fix up the old messed up bikes is doing wonders for my learning how to work on stuff I up to know haven't been familiar with.
Nice ride! Stop by the bike joint and show it off when the weather breaks!

The only way I can imagine a vice and a 2x4 being used to get a stem out would have a pretty high risk of damaging the fork. Stems are easier to find replacements for than forks in most cases!

Thanks Brad, I've been meaning to check out the bike joint, I'll definitely stop by.

2x4 procedure was the stem was seized in the fork completely. Penetrating oil didn't free it. Going at it from below with a bunch didn't free it, so we ended up putting the stem in a bench vise, putting a hub in the fork and twisting the fork side to side with a 2x4 placed down at the crown to free it up.

Checked the fork after on a flat surface and seemed fine. Seems like a reasonable last ditch solution to unsticking a quill stem

i just broke my second bell sweep helmet - this time it was from knocking it down the stairs...am i really ham fisted or are they really fragile helmets. either way it's the last high end helmet i'm buying...

Hey guys, long time no see... I'm planning something fun for this summer, I plan to do a one day trip to Niagara Falls from my house, it's about 130km. Anyone have tips, or a route? I was planning on following Lakeshore down, is there a bike path west of Port Credit at all?

I'm thinking I'll do 40kms every day, with a 80km roundtrip a few weeks before hand to see if I'm going to die or not.

I broke a couple of those too before I bought a Catlike, which has been pretty solid. I think it has to do with the shape of the Sweep- all those skinny spiky things in the back catch on things and break off when they're tapped. Just buy a high-end helmet that doesn't have so many weak pointy things sticking out of it, haha.

If you follow the waterfront trail to port credit, and then head towards the lake after you cross the river the trail continues right along the water at the far west end of the park. Then you're back on lakeshore for a few kms until you get to Jack Darling park (which is an excellent place to go swimming and the hot dog lady is pretty good too) After that, you have to go back into residential streets to get around Rattray march (which is also interesting if you feel like getting off your bike and walking it) and then you pick up the lakeshore "bike" trail again at southdown road and lakeshore. The bike path continues along there until winston churchill and then you're on the lakeshore until you get to hamilton. Around the harbour is nice too instead of the causeway once you get to hamilton, but it will add a lot of hills and kms. You can also very easily ride your bike right onto the QEW if you're not careful. If you do go around the harbour, once you get to the south side make sure you're on Barton st, not burlington... especially once burlington starts to look like the lakeshore in downtown toronto (funny, just how it looks in toronto before you end up riding onto the Gardiner)

Edit: Here's a good source for maps if you want to take the waterfront trail. If you have access to an 11x17 printer they are perfect size for navigating by bike. What they classify as "busy roads" or "steep hills" aren't really of concern to someone who can ride 100kms in a day. It helps if you have a proper ontario map and a compass (and know how to use them) as the trail is hard to pick up sometimes.

i tried a catlike on a while ago and they seem to run a bit small for my melon (plus they're prohibitively expensive). i ended up replacing it with a Bern Brentwood, a bit more casual-friendly even if it makes me look like a storm trooper...

A quick question for the mechanics---I have a nice set of Campy 10-speed wheels (Zondas) and I wondered if I could use them with Shimano Ultegra 10-speed brifters? Would it work? If not, would a shift-mate make it work?

edit: I have seen bikes with a full 9 or 10 speed setup of compatible parts but they still have a shift-mate...why is that?

Who the heck knows. On another kewl kompatibility note: Campy Ergos have almost (.1mm) the same pull as is required from SRAM rear derailleurs, so if you're partial to the L&F of Campy Ergos, but you want Shimano/SRAM wheels & cassettes, that combo will work. I might go for it on my Cambio Rino build, because I have a wheelset (DA-7700 + OpenPros), and Campy Veloce Ergos are dirt-ass cheap from the UK, I have a 105 10-speed cassette already, and SRAM stuff is cheap in North America. It'll be a frankenbike.

Wow. it is interesting that you say that because i just bought a pair of 9 sp veloce shifters & derailers and couldnt make a decision as to what wheel i was going to use. Fortunately i found a freehub body for my ksyriums, but knowing that i have this as an option, and you say .1mm is the same pull? FANTASTIC.

Hmm i guess off to look for a rival r/d?!

I think he meant to say the pull is within 0.1mm. Which would give you nearly a full mm error over a 10sp cassette.

No, kergin is referencing this from velonews a while back:

I did measure the difference in cable pull between SRAM and Campy 10-speed shifters. Nine clicks of a Campy lever pulls 27.0mm of cable, or 3mm per click. Nine clicks of a SRAM lever pulls 27.9mm, or 3.1mm per click. Jtek’s adapter may adjust for this minuscule difference, but in my experience, it works perfectly with no adapter.

I'm not quite buying that at any rate. The pull rate is non-uniform for campy/shimano. Even if the total cable pull is nearly similar. I'm going to take some precise measurements tomorrow.

so i got blindsided by a taxi on my way home from work this evening. i seem to be un-injured but my front wheel is a wobbly mess and i think my fork is bent to one side. for whatever reason i deciided not to call the cops (mostly because i wasn't hurt and the driver seemed to express genuine regret). i took down all his personal and company info and gave him mine. i know we have some legal experts in this forum. i want to be sue that he will pay for the damages. i mean he said he would and i'm going to speak with his boss about it tomorrow. how can i make sure he pays up even though i didn't file a police report? i think i scared him enough that he will anyway, but just to be sure...

I'm glad that you're ok!

The only way to force someone to pay you is to sue them. To win in small claims court you don't need a police report, but it does help. I'm sure you can still do a police report, like a self reporting collision report, today if you wanted to.

You can also suggest that you'll call to complain:

"If you have a compliment or complaint about a taxicab driver, contact Licensing Services at taxiline@toronto.ca or call 1-877-TO-TAXIS." I'm not sure what good it does, but it may help.

Spotted on Queen in the East heading west, all pink fixed, pink bar tape, white deeps, white chain, PINK KNEE Socks on a beaded hipster. It was awful.
