Keeping it off your neck helps a lot. Shave below your jaw line for a sharper looking barbe and less itching.

Foo, thanks: tried that with no joy. It's very odd. I can just add to my hosts file, but I'm trying to figure out what the heck I clicked for this to be happening.

Easy as pie, nowhere else to go. Our direction on the spit (besides providing a map) were "End of Queen East, Left, then 1st Right"

Ya I had a good time hearing about this from some racers. This was my check point and I must admit it was pretty exciting working it especially being we were the prime for $500! Sadly there was not a heads-up sprint for the cash as the guys racing for it were pacing each other up the climb as I was belting out "this peice of paper is worth five hundred bucks...." *nothing* "I'm the prime, sprint for it...." *nothing* "****...get your manifests out..." lol classic

I decided to take a few days off before posting a comment on the race to see what others had to say. I had expected that people would be a little bothered by the out come and would voice opinions as should be the case. The only things that are concerning me are as follows:

1. Nadir and Co. put on one hell of an event that seems to be only receivng partial apraise (spl?). Nadir is a guy who has supported the bike community beyond his own events and has daily been partial and bipartisan to the bike drama I see daily. Of anyone he deserves three cheers (more on this in a few..)

2. This is more of a side note to the above but has anyone forgotten that this event was an open bar and fully catered? I ate til I was stuffed and then got **** faced on vodka red bull and pretty much pillow talked the reb bull girls out of the bike shop (yes, I'm a loser :P) at the expense of some one other then myself. Let's make these type events sound a little more like what they are, a really good time no matter the out come.

*rant over, here is my view on things;

I was fully prepared for a crazy night saturday and that is what I got. I got to the shop in time to get the info for the race from some seriously old school guys from the scene before it was a scene, some of the people behind this were around before I, a conceived fetus was introduced to the terms clipped, fixed, lugged and door prize. I was told a great route, heard stories of 9 a.m. sprints that made me hate responsiblity and a plan that seemed plausable to a naive ear.

I say naive because I didn't plan on a few issues. One being there just wasn't enough man power to support the speed and ability of the peple racing. Essentially the volunteers were out numbered by check points. I worked #3 at Fallingbrook and had an amazing time seeing some great racing. Some highlights include Chris taking the prime (yes he was that far ahead), Ace ripping the BMX/Fixie (made me think of watching Rad at some point) Ben throwng down on a serious climb while riding fixed and Maki repping cross bikes like they are going out of style (they aren't, I love that ****) among others. I met some great people racing but not enough workng points and it seems **** hit the fan at the shop when some racers made it to check points before volunteers did. No matter what Nadir did there are going to be some sad faces. I can't say who is a good/bad sport or who deserves the prize at the end. I see there is some resentment towards the winner and that is your business but I witnessed a lot more people beyond the winner acting beyond what I felt was fair to Nadir. Nadir and Italked trying to figure out what to do. It was clear Chris won the prime and was certainly ahead of the field (yes this doesn't mean he was assured a win) but just means at a certain point he had exceeded the ability of his competitors (some even took the subway!) I told Nadir that no matter his decision some would be upset. There was a logistacal error and it ended the race, end of story. I proposed that either there be a secondary race to conclude the run i.e. frst back to the shop with two ttc stations transfers wins or give the prime to Chris (first to fallingbrook) and donate the winnings (my choice as no one is up on another and though many of you all put your asses on the line vs. the police and on coming traffic, another who needs the money more would recieve a very generous gift from a group (us) that doesn't always give back.) When it came time to decide who would receive the winnings Nadir put it on the table and some were vocal and others were not. If people were so concerned with who took the cake, take it as a note that you had the opportunity to stand up and speak your minds, yes more then one person beleived Chris was the winner but Nadir was democratic and open to suggestions. In the end I appreciated the cheer for the winner (if half hearted) but was bummed to see a no one do the same for a guy that busted his ass to put this all together. I also think a few other people deserve high fives such as Ryan O, Rennick and Hanbone (feel free to plant your tattooed knuckles into my jaw for not "really" knowing your tag) among others for helping run the sprints. Chad, I really hope that if my ass is ever in need you'll be the firefighter busting down my door.

ahe red bull girls I can't say I remember all the events past 10, here is my recollection:

1. Mixed drinks at the bar, Ryan O is leaving and I see a lot of faces from wednesday nights...
2. More mixed drinks and some dude with the greatest moustach on the dance floor is the dance equivilant to Bjork.
3. Standing out back of the shop and laughing my ass off at whatever Zion is saying though I have no ideaWHAT he is really saying, he will remain the funniest dude I have ever met.
4. Standing in line at Johnny's Charbroiled.....WTF?! how did I get here? I ordered a cheeseburger? uh.....ketchup, mustard, onion, pickle. I'll allow myself to imagine I teleported, no idea how I got to Vic Park/Shepperd.
5. In bed and thinking I work at 7 a.m. and work would be that much greater if I had one of those Colnagos....*sleep*

And yes I did make it to work the next day, and on time to boot! ha! Thanks for the good times everyone.

oh man.. I'm so boned at 'cross provincials this weekend. Master A race, here I come. Easy on the sphincter. Well, at least I won't have to do as many laps as the fast guys, because there's no way I ain't gettin' lapped. :P

MattRennick 11-20-07 09:11 AM

Very well said, Wil.

I think you make a very important point - despite the drama at the race it was one hell of a day celebrating one hell of a project and everyone involved deserves a pat on the back... Nadir, Albert, Keith, Sam, Ryan, All Checkpoint Charlies, all riders, Stash, Futura, Colnago, United Front, Redbull, etc...

I really didn't do anything at sprints other than show up, sweep some roadway and ride. ;) Keith, Ryan, Nadir, Betty, Sayer / Redbull folks, and probably some others that I forgot - they all did a fantastic job and despite being a little under the weather I had a great time!

I do regret not officially manning a checkpoint that night... Albert said that they were ok for volunteers and I was just getting over a cold so the prospect of standing in the cold for 3 hours didn't seem all that smart but I ended up doing it anyway at the Opera (taking a break to bring soup to my girlfriend and grab Chris some warmer socks) so I might as well have just taken on another one officially and helped lighten the load.

Same here. I wish I had known they were short on people. I guess with a purse that large I assumed all that crap was sorted.

ps. windows rage moment #4982345: the main tools palette for Illustrator is half off the top of the screen, so I can't grab the top to pull it back down. Now I need to reset/redo my workspace setup since apparently that location has somehow been saved as my preset. grr.

Shop folks: Where to get a Cannondale headshock compatible stem? (I believe it's 38.1" steer tube, 25.4 bar)
