Thanks for the viewit tip! I don't know the city that well. Been half-a-dozen times, but yeah, any tips for neighborhoods would be great! As for "the glut of university students" - count me as one of them...only, hopefully as a 27 yr old grad student, I won't fit the mental image you're picturing.
So yeah...I plan on biking mainly, but after a really nasty accident about 2-3 years ago in NYC on some ice, I'm a bit more wary of riding in icy conditions, so I might like something with some public transportation nearby when the weather isn't cooperating. So, please, tell me about different neighborhoods, their feel, their price, etc. etc. Teach me about your wonderful city. I have a map in front of me, so feel free to name streets as borders of neighborhoods and I can figure it out. I know NYC and SF pretty good in case people want to make comparisions to neighborhoods there. Basically, I don't need anything terribly "hip". I've done that schtick. I just want something close enough to food and whatnot...don't need to be a block away from the cool bars or cafes or whatever. As for frames, $350 CA falls right in the middle of my range, and is a bit less than the prices I'm seeing in SF. On the LBS sticky thread I saw mentions of Cogs Cycle and The Urbane Cyclist...any other hints? |
Cavern Cycles! Since Cavernmech here is too modest to mention it.
P.S. are those cranks in yet? :D P.P.S. what department are you doing your grad studies in? Maybe we can be homies. |

http://toronto.nowtoronto.com/rental...s?section=4376 there's a tab that you can click to search for roommates. if you're heading to school downtown, you'll find a lot of ads for shared apartments with this. rent can get pretty ridiculously cheap when you're sharing.... cam, $680/month for a 2 bedroom is ridiculous. i want to come to your seminar. for good bike stores also check out: cavern cycle, bikes on wheels, cycle therapy... toronto's got a lot of em! |
Grad students L!

You're just jealous that I get paid to go to school.

I know NYC and SF pretty good in case people want to make comparisions to neighborhoods there. It's also a really easy commute to UofT. I work there, so I do that commute 5 days a week, 12 months a year. Harbord is a great commute during rush hour because there's bike lanes for most of it (not that it doesn't stop cars sometimes), and the rest is double-lane and you can usually totally take the curb lane. As for Winter riding... if this helps: I think I took the subway a total of maybe 3 days last Winter. I rode my fixed gear on 23c slicks the whole winter without much trouble at all. The salt Harbord pretty well, so it doesn't ice up much. Of course, all that salt is NOT good for your drivetrain/etc, but that's what fenders are for. :) ps. when do you need an apartment for? Sep 1? or Aug 1? Any idea what your budget is? I just moved out of a great 1-bdrm. The only reason we're moving is because we want a 2-bdrm. Our old place will be available as early as Aug 1 (since that's when we're moving). |
They come in pairs normally, 'specially b00bie traps.
Nice way to forget there's an EAST end Wes, typical west-ender |

don't rule out going as far west as high park. i live off roncesvalles (dundas west / bloor area) and it is a short commute downtown, about 6 km to u of t, an easy bike ride. if you like the idea of being near high park (sort of like toronto's central park, but not as central) it's a plus, great for doing some training loops and climbs through there. always plenty of places to rent too; not a pretentious neighbourhood.
can't comment on the east end, i'll leave that to the east enders on the forum. west-side! |
