Or just fiscally responsible...
|
a fiscally responsible freelance globetrotting cocaine dealing surfer!
|
See Goki's got it. Actually if your really interested in how I afford it its not that complicated. I take my digi camera, laptop and digital voice recorder and write an article and do radio. Usually I make more then I spend on the trip as I own my own surfing gear and have been going to the same surf camps for years so I get good prices. Knowing people and having places to stay also helps a ton, plus when I am in Toronto I live pretty frugally so I can go out and have good times in other places.
But I don't know a freelance coke dealer might be a fun gig! |

seriously, i'm sure all of us could show a bit more impulse control and not buy the triple lattes at starf-ucks, or cut back on the $10 lunches, or the brooks saddles that you really need etc. you'd be amazed where you can scrounge up a grand. i totally agree that the key to travelling is crashing at friends' places!! familiarity with where you're travelling to helps with scoping out all the deals. budgeting $3k-5k for a big trip is not as expensive as it sounds. most of us probably spend that or more on equally frivoulous things in a year. |

I disagree for the block. Workin to secure passports, huts, sun block, and a short gun with tri-fins is workin' to live. Living in Toronto for years slavin away for the school loan, then the car, then the marriage, and then the house, etc etc is workin to live.
I think Offhoff is a Ford Prefect of the skate/surf world and having been a disciple of that world for many many years, I'll almost call him a personal hero, as being jealous is bad Karma. Going to the Philippines in Dec. '07, what Islands to hit there? I'll be in the Provinces. |
shiznaz, buy this to match your track bike

Now THAT is a prudent purchase!
|
Jammer you'll have a righteous time, you going with kids and wife? just wife? solo? You want to surf, long or short board? Have you surfed before? Give me some details on what you want to do I'll make a list and PM it too you of the best me and my friends know of. I might just end up living in southeast asia I damn near took a job in Hong Kong in September.

being a kid....you'd know.....
The rewards are beyond monetary, and they can pay to keep you alive when you are toothless and drooling lest you spend the last of your years scraping dog food tins. With all the romance you displayed in THAT post, you have no worries. Honestly, when I was your age, the same thing totally, fell in love and it all changed. Last night was 15 years ago we met at a halloween party, and basically haven't been apart since. |
More like -1 -2MM :D

I almost got married, bought a house and had kids. Kinda scary now that I think about it, but I can't say I wouldn't still do it if she was still around. Jammer's right it takes the right woman to get the "I want kids" response from a guy. But when you find that girl its like WOW I need to make sure this lasts.

spot the married guys on the forum....
i never considered being married a death sentance; just spent the summer in south america, wife and all. maybe kids cost a lot of money; a bad investment? no, paying rent is a bad investment, a computer or electronics are bad investments. jammer's right, kids will take care of you when you're old (provided you raise them not to hate you). money can't do that. that said, am i nervous about having kids? **** yes! |
if you find the right Lady your very lucky and there are still some out there and you don't have to have kids I helped raise eight and I am tired of getting pooped on pee'd on and peuked on , no more diapers for me but you never know I could find a good lady and have some ( what amazed me was when the kids peuked they laughed after like it was no big thing)

Marriage is fun. My wife tells me this everyday.
I've enjoyed being married everyday, had wonderful experiences and traveled all over Asia the last 2 years from India because of her job. The only downside I guess is th 5000 pics on the computer that need to be edited/deleted to a resonable number from all the travels. But she doesn't ride so there is always that issue. edit: bikes, she isn't a bike rider. |
Anyone wanna do tradesies w/ a frameset? It's this one, minus the decals:
http://img.epinions.com/images/opti/..._100-bikes.jpg I'd be happy w/ an old Steamroller or whatever (just lookin' for fork ends and practical). With my long-ass legs I think this thing's just going to have waaay too much drop if I build it back up. Size is a 53 I believe. I'm looking for something w/ a 54-55cm tt (horizontal tt preferably). PS. Moving chews, but the new place is rad. PPS. Effective top tube is about 53.5/54cm, but the drop makes it feel longer. |
damn! if that sucker were bigger i'd make you an offer you can't refuse. always wanted one of those.
|
Wasn't your girlfriend riding that frame? Did she get a replacement?
|
Yep, it was shared between us for a bit, then her's once my Pake was done, but it's too long for her so I got her a wee little Crosscheck to build up as a singlespeed (avec tied & soldered Open Pro/Formula/DT Comp. wheels). It's going to have a rack/fenders/Arkel trunk bag and probably the bars that are currently on my Pake.

:edited for silly spelling: Also this weekend seems to be the best forecast weekend in about a month. Sun and cloud, temperature fluctuating in the single digits. No reports of ridiculous wind. |
