Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The weight has to come from my wheels and components because my frame is aluminum and my fork is carbon. I also have mechanical disc brakes which suppose to be heavier. Is there a weight difference between mechanical and hydraulic disc brakes.

Your aluminum frame is probably adding 1 lb to what your would have with a better, but not best, carbon frame. I bet it weighs 3 lb in a Medium or 54 size. Actually probably more than that.

At Madison County Lake, I used the fish scale:

scale read 18.75 pounds. I didn't check to see if the scale was tared to zero first so Domane owners don't flail me if the weight is too high.

Between your saddle bag, tail light, and frame pump, you could prob subtract at least a pound from that.

How Lightweight Do You NEED Your Bike To Be?

I'm going to guess that there are few if any pro cyclists here. So, given that most of us are recreational cyclists, how much does weight really matter? I get into the weight weenie thing as much as most but have to step back once in awhile.

Yeah, the stated frame weight for the AI granfondo disc is 1340g (a hair under 3 lb).

For comparison, the CAAD 10 is 1150g (2.5 lb).

And the 3 Allez D'Aluisios range from 1050g to 1250g (2.3 lb - 2.75 lb).

All weights are for size 56.

If they are jpegs on your computer, just select the film icon and double click on the photo file. After it is downloaded, you can size it up by double clicking on the image. Other folks will have to tell you haw to access a sharing site.

Hey, I've got that scale in yellow. Works great. Cheap as dirt. Love it. I was balking at spending $60 on a "real" bicycle scale and thought to look up other scales that serve less expensive sports...like fishing. Gotta love the Chinese.

Yeah, it was less than ten bucks, but it broke after a couple of years and I ended up buying a higher quality one for about five times as much.

As it stands, with pedals, 16.3 lbs. I think I could still easily shave off another pound. After that, it's going to get expensive.

Uhm, lets see that on a scale. My Merlin extralight (admittedly in a 59cm frame) weighs 16 pounds and change, with an upgrade cf fork with threadless carbon steerer. With a threaded steerer, I'm sceptical that gets to 14 and a half pounds.

Looking at the pic closer, I may have been precipitous. DT Shifters, no front derailleur, one by set up would save a fair amount of weight.

But the threaded steerer/fork still costs a pound compared to an all carbon threadless fork set up.

I hear ya. The wheels are light, Reynolds Assault tubulars (now de-stickered). Ti stem. American Classic seatpost. Fizik Arione R3 saddle. And various light bits. Of course, my digital scale could be off, but that's what it says. I'll try to take a pic when I get a chance.

It's wild how quick the weight adds up... mine is quoted at 15.5lbs when it's bare (Emonda SL8 Dura Ace) as a medium frame. My actual bike (64cm/XXL frame) was 15.9lbs.

Then swap out the minimalist saddle for something with padding, add pedals, swap out the puncture loving tires, add Garmin mount, add bottle cages... I think I'm mid 17's ready to ride (excluding filled water bottles).

That's why I stick to the showroom condition for comparing bikes that I might be interested in. No, it's not what the bike will weigh when I ride it, but it is the base case for comparison of bikes under consideration.

Nice find, I was looking around for frame weight of the granfondo. I would love to get it down to 18lbs. I spend $1,800 for my rig, I was a bit disappointed when the scale was near 22lbs. Dropping 4lbs is tough without going broke
