I know that terrain, weather, and a million other considerations can affect average speed. I also know that average speed is not a good indicator of anything. I've read all the arguments why we shouldn't pay any attention to average speed, BUT ...

Just for fun, and not to be used as any sort of training information or anything like that ...

When you look down at your computer during a ride (Not a race!! Just a RIDE!), or when you fill your logs in at the end of your rides, what is your "usual" or "average" riding speed?

Be honest here, I'm not looking for the macho answers, just the common everyday speed at which you travel.

I usually ride somewhere between 22 and 24 km/h (13.6 to 15 mph)

soccerismylife 04-16-05 07:52 PM

Anywhere form 15 to 23 mph. It all depends.

ADA23 04-16-05 07:56 PM

Around 27 KPH over a 60K ride

krazyderek 04-16-05 08:00 PM

27-31km/h, depends what i had to eat.. but that's on 7k commute's, longer rides it's usualy steady at 27km/h

blandin 04-16-05 08:05 PM

19-20 avg. mph. I usually ride between 27 to 40 miles on a paved bike trail.

jennings780 04-16-05 08:06 PM

24-27kph over rides of over an hour but less than two.
Thats running an average heart rate of 135 - 140bpm.
I'm a newbie. Until January I mainly just swam and MTN biked on the weekends some. So, I hope to get faster.

Entropy906 04-16-05 08:11 PM

I've only had my road bike since February adn have only been on about 8 rides but I average about 16-17 mph over 50-70 miles.

steve_wmn 04-16-05 08:30 PM

My speed on a flat road is anywhere from 16-22 mph, depending on wind and motivation. But when I log the elapsed time and distance in a spreadsheet and compute the overall average speed it usually falls in the 15-17 mph range.

Heh since a mile is a km. Going from 15 to 16 is a lot greater than 15kph to 16kph. Damn you imperial guys.

I usually average in the above quoted speeds.

nnewton123 04-16-05 08:43 PM

Average usually winds up being between 17 and 20 mph depending on conditions, duration and effort.

Laggard 04-16-05 08:43 PM

Wow, another average speed thread.

orthoclase 04-16-05 08:47 PM

Between 13-16 mph, depeneding on length of ride. It seems I can get a better average on a longer ride (>45 minutes). HR stays about 154 (yes, I need to get in better shape and quit smoking).

Trouble 04-16-05 08:53 PM

According to my BikeJournal.com; 2004 was 16.68 mph avg. spd. That was after 145 rides totaling 4500 miles.
Some rides I was able to come in around high 17s, most were in the high 16s low 17s. The reason for the 16.68 I think was due to a bunch with my girl friend. Those were in the 12-13s, throwing my avg. way off.

witcomb 04-16-05 08:57 PM

8 to 15 mph overall. the more fun i'm having, the slower i go. but i do 5000 miles a year.

azesty 04-16-05 09:00 PM

In Adelaide where it was flat a really good round trip commute of 30 km would be 60 minutes total, 30kph average.

But here in Hobart with a 24 km round trip I am lucky to average 22 kph, damn those hills! :)

About 186000 miles per second.

either your computer is off, or you are the biggest stud in the world.

It's about 16-18 mph right now, I remember when I could average over 20 all the time, hopefully will be there by summer..

Monument Man 04-16-05 09:40 PM

today i rode 30 miles and averaged around 16.5 mph but that included stops at plenty of lights, about 12 miles was hardcore city stuff and the rest was an awesome bike trali with occasional stops at road intersections but i was cranking during that part (for me anyway)

love going fast but the hills kill me.

Dchiefransom 04-16-05 09:43 PM

Combining flat and hilly rides, I average overall between 13 and 14mph for everything.

Trogon 04-16-05 09:58 PM

I have 1138 rides in my spreadsheet and the average speed for all of them is 16.774456 mph.

Most of the time I'm riding about 20. Which once again illustrates why average speed is a useless statistic.

Well I did a lot of riding last summer on my mountain bike (2000 miles mostly road) and I've been keeping up on the trainer so it's not like I'm starting out cold. And I've double checked the distances with Map Point and the computer is not off.

Absolutely no offense intended, but why does that make average speed a useless figure? I find it the best indicator of my overall strength and aerobic capacity - of course taking ride conditions, such as wind, into account. For your purposes, it may not be of personal interest but there are those of us who get a kick out tracking it on a regular basis.

socalrider 04-16-05 10:54 PM

Some rides you hit a lot of lights and others not so much.. This brings your average up or down quite a bit.. If your talking an uninterrupted bike trail, this would be an easy gauge of fitness..

sorebutt 04-16-05 10:57 PM

On a ride like this I get 14 mph on a good day..:)
