Update on the @$%&! saddle sores issue.

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If you are troubled with saddle sores ... after every ride:

-- shower
-- wash the affected area with a shampoo containing zinc (dandruff shampoos)
-- dry well
-- apply zinx oxide cream (diaper rash cream)
-- put on loose boxers to allow air flow and because the cream is really messy.
Rode this morning for the first time in two weeks--good, brisk 25-mile ride before work. Based on another hint I found online, I used a small amount of Preparation H on the affected area before Chamois Butt'r. I had noticeably less discomfort on this ride than on previous rides--possible the Prep H, the time off to heal up, or maybe a combination of the two.

Post-ride I followed your advice about washing "down there" with pyrithione zine shampoo (which I've used on my scalp for years). Afterwards I dried off, I used the zinc oxide cream.

At this point I am cautiously optimistic.

While the betamethasone cream can help nicely, I would be careful with it, especially in that part of the body. It's a dirty part of the body. Cortisone creams can increase your risk of cutaneous infections. If I were to use it, I would combine it with antibiotic and antifungal creams.

Do what your dermatologist tells you, but I'd be concerned about using it solo down there.

This may not help the OP but one thing I found is I need to adjust my saddle differently in the Spring. Apparently my riding position is different when I'm not in shape and I occassionlly get saddle sores. So I lower it maybe 1/4 inch and tilt the nose down slightly. Then in a month or do when I ride more and harder, it goes back.

If you are willing to give natural prevention a try...I make a mix of shae butter, tea tree oil, almond oil, and oregano oil. I used to have a problem with saddle sores.

Simple. Buy more shorts. Wash as needed to ensure you always wear a clean pair. I -never- ride with a pair of shorts twice before washing them. Absolutely never. I guess I have about 5 pair of shorts and after I'm down to 2 pair or so I make sure the others are washed. I also never ride without showering that day at some point before going and after I get back from a ride I shower. Sometimes I just wash up but the key is to keep clean and upon returning, clean and dry.
