Road cycling in and around Amsterdam?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Road cycling in and around Amsterdam?

I will be working in Amsterdam for 3 months in July, August and September.
I know that Amsterdam is great for commuting by bike, but what about road cycling?
Is it possible to easily get out of town and escape the dense bike and car traffic to do some road cycling?
I plan to buy a used city bike there to get around, but I also plan to bring my road bike if it is worth the trouble.
Also, I know that the Netherlands are mostly flat, but are there ANY modest hills around the city? I like to climb.
Thanks

It is easy to get out of Amsterdam. Amsterdam is not a very big city compared cities around the world.
There are NO hills around Amsterdam, the closest will be in Limburg, around 300 km.
Try cycling the Afsluitdijk, about 30 km of straight cycling.

Thanks. Approximately how long does it take to get to the countryside by bike? 45 min?
Any suggestions of nice road cycling destinations for a 2-3h loop?

In 45 minutes you should be in the countyside.
Sorry, but I'm not from Amsterdam, so can not really help with cycling around Amsterdam.
There is a good online routeplanner that I use often: Fietsersbond Routeplanner

Thank you paulkal. And about how much should I expect to pay to buy a used city bike?

For second hand roadbikes, look at Marktplaats, the local craigslist:

Might as well merge with the other thread while you're at it.
