Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First road bike

After trying many bikes I've found the CAAD8 2015 road bike. Its for $890 USD out the door and has Claris groupset. They didn't have my frame size in stock (61cm) but may end my search and throw down the cash on this bike.

What do you guys think of this model? Just want to hear some second opinions.

Haha thanks. I'll be using this as an everything bike from speed, recreational, touring, commuting, etc. Just a bit paranoid the riding geometry will cause issues when riding for long periods.

The last major issue will be getting it through customs back to Canada unmolested (tax grab) :O

"You buy anything on your visit to the States?"

Road cycling, drop bar style, is a little tough on the neck muscles while your body adjusts to supporting more of the weight of your head. The position itself, IMHO, is great because the bars permit several contact points that are appropriate to different cycling situations. For example, I like to be in the drops when descending fast. It lowers my center of gravity, prompts me to slide back in the saddle, and ready on the brakes.

I thought the CAAD8 was a good choice because I think the frame is extremely good. So good that it can support components much more pricey than you're considering. I think you're smart to buy such a good frame. It is also a bit more upright, taller headtube, which takes some of the presssure off your hands, neck, and shoulders. The CAAD10 is a more advance design but also a more race, as opposed to "sportif". Language... Haha

I wish such good bikes had been available when I was younger.

It felt better then some of the other bikes which put a bit too much stress on my neck. Glad I waited it out and found this one. Not sure what you mean by that quote, but bringing the bike back would cost me another $150 in Canadian Taxes + other potential tariffs. Canada is peanuts compared to the offers in the glorious south.

Definitely a good buy. The Claris group is pretty rudimentary, but miles ahead of most things that were around 10, possibly 5, years ago. The CAAD8 frame is definitely highly respected and good to put upgraded components on if you so choose.
