does getting passed ,mess with your head?? because..
It shore does me ,being a new road biker, and probably 80 to a 100 lbs lighter than every one else ,yes imma clyde .I hate getting blown by me ,it just gets in my head ,some times I push harder but can't keep up .
The other day while riding solo I caught up to one guy n blew by him ,and man my self esteem went up n I hit the hill n never saw him again ,it seemed to make me push harder after I got ahead of him . I guess I just wanna know do you feel the same way .I guess I'm always a competitive person n being new n usually getting passed it whipped me passing someone. Just thought I'd ask what ur thoughts were.

It all depends If I'm riding againt time or leisure. I don't race but it does feel good to blow the jersey off another rider.

Unless you are in a race (a real race, not the one in your head) passing someone means absolutely nothing. For all you know they could be 50 miles into their ride and was just spinning an easy gear to take a breather, while you are fresh on mile 1 going full gas. Being a heavier rider myself, I definitely do not try to match the pace of a lighter riding who flies past me, especially on a climb; its a recipe for disaster.
If you ever want to improve as a cyclist you need to understand a concept called tempo - momentarily accelerating to blow past someone who doesn't even know you are attempting to race them only to run out of breath a couple minutes later does very little for your overall fitness even if it does boost your self-esteem. Of course this doesn't apply if you're doing interval training.

I don't care if it doesn't mean anything, I still like passing people, even if it's just kids on BMX bikes.

I hate being passed. It's an automatic challenge to me, quite honestly. Even though i'm not fast, i still try way too hard to keep up. Today, a bigger guy passed me pretty easily on the flats so i stuck behind him grinding out a few miles because i knew i would drop him on an upcoming hill. The hill came, i dropped gear and him along with it. Hammered it the rest of the way home. Sure it's kind of a ****** thing to do, but like you, being passed gives me the motivation to just give all i got.

Riders that turn themselves inside out to pass, can't hold it, and now you have to expend energy to pass them. They get on your wheel, rest and then pass you again and then it starts all over. You are just trying to finish up your ride with something left for the last two climbs and you have to deal with this guy. Don't be that person. Some people ignore that behavior and some will ride you into the curb. It really is bad behavior to impact someone else's ride like that, especially if you know you can't maintain the pace.

I ride the speed I want to ride regardless of who is in front of me or coming up from behind. Their speed is their ride. My speed is mine.

I pass people all the time. Sometimes I look back to see if it's messed with them.
I don't get passed too often. When I do I don't really worry. Most of the time when I'm passed I'm already an hour or so into my ride.

'Drope the hamer'* threads are second only to 'waving' threads for sheer entertainment value. I suppose that, recently, 'dick breaks' threads are running third?
*Phrase appropriated to describe any/all threads and posts wherein the OP or poster attempts to impress with his (usually 'he') prowess on a 'biek'. Often, of course, accompanied by false modesty (e.g. "I know it's questionable, but I just can't help myself" etc.).

There I was plodding along comfortably about 20 km from the finish after having spent the previous 35-ish hours cycling the 600K randonnee.
Some kid was cycling out of the city toward me ... he went by me, and when he reached some point behind me, he suddenly turned around and started riding like he thought he was doing a sprint finish in the TDF to catch up to me. I could see him in my mirror. He blew past me, and not only that, but he did that underarm look thing ... The Look.
Yeah ... big accomplishment there kid!! You just caught someone who has been riding day and night for the previous 35-ish hours, who is not moving very fast at all, and who has absolutely no desire to race. Woo!

You are talking about 'cat 6' riders.
google: site:bikeforums.net "cat 6"
(Cat 1 to 5 are actual racing categories / classifications. Cat 6 is street racing where the other rider doesn't know it's a race.)

Some guy who was touring yelled at the group last week as we were going by, saying something like "you think your fast you speedy wannabes" we were just hanging on the wheel of our local domestic pro. Kind of funny how upset the dude seemed. We gave him plenty of room.

There is something primal about it that takes self discipline to resist. Even on hikes I have an almost overwhelming urge to pass anyone in front of me.
When I'm doing flat LSD runs on the local MUT it is fun though to let a strong rider, (lots of TT types use the same trail) pass and then jump on their back wheel for a few miles of a free ride (especially if there's any headwind).
The repeated under the armpit look, Why is this geezer with fat tires still on my wheel?

It only messes with my head on a climb when I know deep down I'm fresh and have no excuse..... it simply means that the other rider is a faster climber than me, feelings of inferiority creep in, rationality about relevant factors like weight get tossed out the window and it makes me work harder on my climbing.
If I had already blown the engine and got dropped or passed on a climb then that doesn't bother me.
On flats, don't care. On descents, don't care.

Getting passed in a TT sucks, but I've only had that happen a couple times in the last decade.
