Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

OP: I don't think that your sock question is a stupid question, but YES THERE IS SUCH THING AS A STUPID QUESTION!

A stupid question is one that reveals the asker as lazy or thoughtless. People will think less of you when you ask a question that any idiot should have been able to figure out for him or her self. The pervasive mantra of "There is no such thing as a stupid question" is well-intentioned - people should not be shy about their curiousity or pretend they know the answer to questions that they are keeping to themselves, but the idea has been taken to excess and bred a generation of people too lazy to think things through for themselves.

I like thin breathable socks and none of the generic athletic ones come in the "right" length for cycling. So I usually end up spending $10-12/pair for cycling specific socks. Pretty cheap compared to what I spend on bibs and jerseys...

I'll second wool...but on the bike I wear either cotton or synthetic usually. When I'm hiking, I have a pair of Smartwool socks. Warm when its cold out and cool when its hot. Well worth the $15 I paid for them!

Socks are the most underrated part of cycling attire. The perfect sock is like finding a white whale.

But...do you have one of these?

After reading this thread you've convinced me to give wool a try. Bought (4) these at $7.50/pr. --- SmartWool Sport Ultra Light Micro Socks.

I get free diabetic ankle socks and they work great, I tried wool but like the free ones better, they wick away good....I might get some different wool ones and try. Free is so good though.
