Wow! Who threw that extra cog in there?! Wow a 16
1300 dollars later and my journey into 10 speed is over...
Trek 2100 - Now with full DA 7800 drivetrain
DA 7800 53-39 180mm crankset
DA 7800 11-23 Ti Cassette
DA 7800 FD and RD
DA 7800 STI shifters with Flightdeck
DA Silver Shifter and Brake Cables
DA 7800 Brakeset
DA 7800 BB
All I can say is, the bike is amazing quick.
Some background.
Bought crankset, deraileurs, BB, about 3 months ago
Bought brakes about 2 months ago
Today got chain, cassette, shifters. I can not believe the difference finally bringing 10 speed is. The bike can now hit about 23 MPH in the small ring. On a quick test spin on a flat track, no wind I was able to hit 26 MPH no clipless, no spinning with the new cassette. The shifting is crisp and responsive, it is great. The bike is now making no more annoying noise in the big ring or in the deraileur and less triming is required for the rear shifts.
My bike is finally 95 percent done. I have decided to not go carbon on the handlebars and stem for now, the new fork is going to wait a while. I am getting my carbon cages soon, they are calling me from my LBS. I got annoyed becasue the stupid wireless flightdeck reciever is 9 or 10 speed specific so I had to waste my cage money on that
The only thing is the annoying is the feel of the shifters. I like the alot but it will take some getting used to them. The 53-16 gear is just right...
For those of you that have 10 speed DA drivetrain, how do you like the shifters?
EDIT : My mechanic who races cat 4 says... we are getting rid of your little boy cassette (12-27) and now you are graduating to a real MANs cassette (11-23) ... you are pro...
The bike weighs in at just under 19 pounds. I think that 18 pounds is possible with the fork but it is low on my priority list as of now, the cervelo is much more important to this point... (need to pay for that DA drivetrain... at least my parents are helping out there...

I went from Shimano 600 w/ down tube shifters to an all carbon bike with full Dura Ace 7800 including the wheels. It was like going from the Wright Flyer to an F-22 Raptor. I test rode the same bike with 105, Ultegra and Dura Ace, I could tell the difference between the 105 and the Ultegra but the difference between the Ultegra and the Dura Ace was minimal. I finally decided on Dura Ace...well...just because, I thought this would be my last bike for a long time and I wanted the best (yea, yea I know about campy and I don't want to hear about it here).
The question is, just how much of a difference do you notice?

I think the big difference for me is the shifters. (And the 5 mm longer cranks), they are just so much more responsive than the ultegra 9 shifters.
Which ultegra did you test, the ultegra 10 or ultegra 9. I agree that the difference between 10 and DA 10 is small...
The shifters just feel so much different...

It was before the 10 speed came out, come to think of it that might have been a factor in getting Dura Ace. Coming off of an old 7 cog cassette I didn't want to feel the regret of not just going ahead and spending the money in the beginning. So I bit the bullet and got Dura Ace, NO regrets. About the shifters, since I came off of down tube shifters I was in heaven with these.

my58vw, i'm about where you were 3 months ago. waiting on my brakes, shifters and cassette. i'm riding mostly DA 9 now.
question: you switched to DA10 shifters before the cassette. were you running ultegra or DA9 cassettes with the new shifter? were there any problems with it?
i'm asking cuz i'm trying to upgrade in pieces, next move will be (1) brakes, (2) shifters, then (3) cassette/FD/chain.

Sorry I got crank and deraileurs and BB, ran ultegra 9 shifters, 105 brakes and 9 speed cassette for some time.
Then I got brakes,
Then I got the shifters, cassette and chain.
I will have pics when I get home, my baby is sitting behind me calling for me to ride... do you think 1 am is too late to ride
Here are the issues I did have.
The 9 speed chain was a little noisy on the DA crank in the big ring (it would drive me crazy) in all gears. Even though it is 9 speed compatable the 9 speed cassette would shift a little hard (a little clunky (kind of like campy (j/k) ) It worked well but I longed for the 18 and 16 gears out back (well I ended up with a 16 and a 11). The 16 is an awsome gear, it is kind of between suffering and not going fast enough in many crit situations.
Assuming that the 9 speed crank and FD are fine for 10 speed I would upgrade the brakes, then the RD than the chain, shifters and cassette. The last upgrade is the most expensive by far (I spent about 650 today for shifters, 2 cassettes (a DA and an Ultegra) and DA chain (+ 30 install). 750 when you add the new bar tape, the stupid flight deck part and and few other small parts)

thanks my58vw, it makes sense. 53-11 advised the same in another post, but i wanted to see if you had a different path, and this makes it definitive. glad to hear your rig is complete!

How does it feel to go from 175mm cranks to 180 mm, does it make a difference on flats or only uphill?

It can work better, but you have to know how to adjust your seat. The seat should move a little bit more forward (5mm) becasue the spindle is now longer at 3 o'clock.
I like mine though. I think the biggest benefits are endurance because you use a little bit more muscle in the movement.
It's not earth shaking- we are talking about a 3% change in length. Some people may not like the extra length if they are maxed out on what they currently ride. The extra 5mm in length can feel like 10mm at the knee becuase the bottom pedal is 5mm lower at the same time the top is 5mm higher.

That's kind of weird that the 9 spd chain made such a racket on the big ring on the DA 7800 cranks. Shimano would have to know that people may very well buy the cranks to use on their older DA setups and not actually upgrade to full 10s stuff. Odd.

You need to 'drop' the seat 5mm to accomodate the longer cranks. You effectively now need to reach 5mm further to the pedal at BDC. You might also find your knees will hit you in the chest in the drops by 10mm if you drop the seat 5.

Eventually, and I mean eventually I will get a real nice frameset (i.e. drewling over a seven). Of course I would never take that kind of frame into a crit or even rr due to a small accident possibly damaging a nice 4200 dollar frame seet ) More than likely the 2100 will end up as the maiin crit bike. By the time I get the new frame I am sure something better will be out (well a nice dura ace groupo) to throw on there. For now I am probably going to leave it the way it is, but we will see.
I have my mind on other projects (See sig below)...
