Assos bib sizing
 

I'm 5' 6.5" / 130lbs, wide thighs, short legs, 29-30" waist. I wear S in rapha classic and I'm in between S and M in Rapha Pro.

Should I get the S or M in Assos?

When I was considering buying my first pair of Assos bibs I, too, was unsure of sizing. I had always had difficulty with PI bibs because the waist size and strap size seemed incompatible for my body. I called Competitive Cyclist and talked to one of their reps and gave him my dimensions. (Which are 5'9" & 180 lbs. He said the Unos in L would work. He was right. I'd suggest a call.

Per the Assos size charts, you're on upper limit for a S. However, you indicated that you have short legs.. I assume you mean in relation to your torso? Since leg length only matters if you're looking for tights (are you?), and doesn't really matter for shorts, and if this means that your torso is relatively 'oversized' (longer), I'd probably say try the M.

I'm bigger than you and squeeze into a small.

I'm looking for shorts. I have relatively short inseam at 29-30". Rapha's Pro bib in M is quite long and if the assos shorts have longer legs, the leg opening might be a little bit loose (because of reaching the lower parts of my thights).

Beyond what you'll fit into, the question of what type of fit you prefer is tough to answer. To provide another point of reference; I'm 5'10", 185lbs, slightly biased towards long torso/short legs...both the medium and large fit me fine, but differently. When I first went to buy Assos, I couldn't decide which fit I liked better from trying them on at the shop, so I ended up buying one pair medium and one large. With some miles on them, I discovered that the large pair "disappeared" more, which is what I prefer. The mediums are still in the rotation, and still plenty comfy, just a different fit.

Based on that experience and your dimensions, I'd venture a guess that you're going to be better off in the smalls.

Totally true. I'm 5,9 145lbs and prefer a very tight fit. My bibs feel tight and uncomfortable walking around, but perfect on the bike.

I'm not sure but I think Assos sizes differently depending on which "line" you buy. Their distance models tend to be less compressive, according to their literature, so they feel bigger.

And, Competitive Cyclist often has decent sales on Assos. The good news for the OP is that if he's looking for size Small, there are likely to be sales whereas not so much for M and L. My Assos bibs cost me $130 on sale.

A good cycling friend always swore by Assos. I was turned off by their high cost. I ended up buying the Large S5 from the Assos Factory outlet was they were the same price as the PI I have been using. What a big difference. The Assos are designed for the on the bike positions. They just make the miles melt away on long rides. As my PI are starting to wear out, I will be replacing them with Assos.

I think I'll try the entry level NeoPro_s7 just to see how it turns out. It's for $190 on competitive cyclist. It's not cheap, but it's definitely not super expensive.

Instead of ordering online I went to a shop nearby to try on a pair. They didn't have the neopro s7 so I tried on the equipe s7 instead. My very first impression was: "oh wow".
Small fits me perfectly.

To be honest it fits much better than the rapha classic / pro bibs. I'm a huge rapha fan, but I must admit that even the entry / mid level assos bibs are superior based on the first impressions. We will see.

I bought my Unos from Excel Sports and they have a return/exchange policy.
The Assos I bought were the same size that I have worn in 3 other brands, fwiw.
I wasn't comfortable buying from the Assos Outlet due to possible costs of return or exchange.
Happy with mine, overall.

Of course it all depends on how they fit YOU but mine are F1 Unos and I can't wear anything else now. I have 3 pair and bought each, at different times, for about $130 each.
