Yes, that's true. I have used the books and worked with coaches, but I don't fully understand the mechanisms. But as a rule of thumb, the longer intervals help get me to the end of the race; the shorter intervals help me do what needs to be done at the end of the race.

I do not race anybody but me, but that rule does remind me to try to keep the same HR on a decline as an ascent (both are usually very short duration here). One of my favorite 8 mile stretches coming home is a lot more fun if you work as hard at the declines as you do the inclines. Fun to find the LTHR for the day and flirt with it :-).
What does a decline mean to you "I can take it easier now".....or "I can go faster now, and maybe carry 20+ over the next hill" ?

i do that one too, and like i mentioned before, i just cant imagine with 1 minute recoveries, that someone can repeatedly hit 140% FTP for 5 minutes, and do that for a few hours. im dead by the end of the 6th, or 7th interval.

140% of FTP for 5 minutes, repeatedly? My first reaction is that this person is either a national-class pursuiter or he has his FTP set too low and needs to retest.

Normally 5 min intervals @ 140% are VO2Max intervals and you want to fully recover, i.e. at least 5 min rest before the next one for maximum benefit. Shorter recoveries yield lower power in later intervals. 6 - 5 min intervals at 130% with 5 min rest still ends up with an NP well over 100% so again probably not possible.

Yeah, that makes sense when you do the math like that. So that leaves "needs to retest."
