Matt Lauer's "Red Nose" Ride

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Matt Lauer's "Red Nose" Ride

So Matt is riding from Boston to New York. He plans to get there by Thursday. Let's talk about his equipment. He has a Specialized with disc brakes. It's funny. He was wearing a visored helmet, sort of like a trail bike helmet. But this morning when he took off with a female companion, she had that helmet and he had a road helmet. Weird.
I wish him luck and safety. I hope this ride raises awareness for road cycling in general and his charity in particular. I can personally relate to this more than that stupid ice bucket challenge.

He's a pretty in-shape guy from what I've read. It is interesting though; when celebrities do some sort of charity bike ride you would think they have access to all the best equipment, most of it probably for free. But still...they often end up wearing some funky stuff. Wonder if he's using clipless? In Matt's case, I think I've heard that he really does ride.

Based on his past behavoir, I expect him to cheat by getting rides in the sag wagon and lie about it. He's the last thing cycling needs, same morals as Lance. All he needs is a Trek to complete the look....

That makes no sense at all. What behavior are you talking about or do you just have no other threads to troll?

What the hell are you babbling about, Dingus?

Matt Lauer is a NATIONAL TREASURE. You, well you're pretty much a big fat zero.

Can you point me to a website that reports about Matt Lauer comparing American soldiers to terrorists? I tried googling this without much luck.

Is that what he said?

I'm not arguing with you but I'd like to read what he said.

He questioned weather we were any different from the terrorists we were fighting. He also compared Washington's revolutionary army to terrorists fighting in Fallujah at the same time I was in that city. I'm sure you can find it, I never forget stuff like that but I don't save google links. To each his own beliefs, but to call this d-bag a "national treasure" is stupid.

I agree, although I'd prefer if he was riding a Trek, as I own two of those, and only 1 Specialized (and it's a MTB).

The bit about the revolutionary army got me some google hits as it is more specific. Thanks.

Isn't it a reporters job to question and not to pick sides? I personally see no problem with this.

I think it's stupid not to be able to distinguish an obvious critique of the policy makers who put the soldiers there rather than the soldiers themselves.

Maybe threads about such polarizing and controversial figures as Matt Lauer need to be more heavily moderated.

If we can't talk about a celebrity who is on a bike ride, then that shuts down something which should be a piece of bike forums, right? Plus I don't think too many people think he is polarizing on this list or indeed anywhere else.

If anyone thought a thread about Matt freaking Lauer wasn't going to be controversial and political then you just aren't living in reality. He's a typical biased NBC media dude and if that's your thing then cool. But I wasn't even going to say anything until someone called him a "national treasure". That's laughable. Sorry, but he doesn't give me a thrill up my leg. Carry on.

+1 on the above. As for the person who called him a National treasure, you're kidding, right?

I suppose that I am really lucky in that I don't find Matt Lauer controversial. He is a likeable "personality" that really has no effect on my thoughts and beliefs. To me he is a morning tv entertainer that brings us the news. The fact that he is showing cycling in a positive light on national TV is fantastic.

Some of you guys really need to adjust your sarcasm detectors.

Props to Matt Lauer. He doesn't have to be a perfect person for this to be a positive thing.
