Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

(Don't worry, not a debate)

Right now I have a shimano ultegra bottom bracket with a 105 double crankset (53/39). I forgot what the back is but it's an ultegra 9sp. Am I able to switch to a compact crank (50/34) without changing the derailleurs and bottom bracket? I also plan on getting an 11/23 rear cassette if shimano makes these (ultegra).

So what all do I need to change to switch to a new 50/34 crank?

Thanks

Find a compact crank like the Ritchey that is 109.5 octalink BB compatible, and you are golden.

The ritchey compact will work with Octalink BB.. You will just need to lower your front derailleur a little bit and your good to go..

I know that the FSA Cranks are all ISIS spline, so if you go that way, you will need crankset and BB.. There are some older model FSA that are octalink compatible, they are becoming harder to find..

besides lowering the front derailleur, you will need to shorten the chain length too (2-3 links), then it should workout nicely!

you can actually buy a 34 from Nashbar. They sell a compact but it is an ISIS dive, which if you don't have is another part to buy.

they sell 110 mm chainrings i think in 34 or 36 depending on preference. If you can't find one there order a replacement 34 for a FSA compact.

compact's rule! Less overlapping gearing, more effevtive gears. Good mountains without the third and less angle on the chain if your cross shifting.
