"It wasn’t more than ten minutes into the ride before our first possible near miss had occurred. A “Robert” on a Trek got in front of Lance from his right side and started to swerve and fade going up a short climb. Robert nearly took down the most famous cyclist in the world without even knowing what he just did. Lance immediately swerved to his left and bumped shoulders with me to avoid a very bad start to a long day. It was his reaction and response that impressed me most. He looked at me and we both laughed. Lance didn’t say anything negative to Robert, he never yelled, insulted him, made him feel like an ass, as would be so common on any Saturday morning group ride. I took my cue from him and put my hand on Robert’s left hip and slowly moved him to the right side of the line. First disaster avoided."

I heard of a case around here where they brought the helo in, the patient refused transport by helo, the helo left. The PATIENT got the bill for the $12,000 or whatever it was, and maybe should have IMHO. The Insurance would have paid had the patient gotten ONTO the helo. Female member of extended family tells her kids , "if the helo comes, you are getting ON the darn thing" hehe.

So I'd be surprised if this is factual.

One thing I have never discussed with my bicycling friends is politics! We are all just cyclists!
Hope he has a speedy recovery.

Happened to be with sister in law at graduation party when I read a previous post. Life flight was called for patient who had been thrown from horse, patient opted for EMS transport while life flight was inbound. Patient was billed $12,000 and insurance refused payment because patient opted for EMS instead of life flight, she knew the patient first hand, had all the specifics so it was not a rumor she heard. So IMHO if they send the chopper I'm riding the darn thing :-).

I had an accident in front of a coffee shop, they called for an ambulance, I refused to let them touch me, they left, no bill.

The Wall Street Journal:
Seven years ago, the former pro cyclist turned manager Jonathan Vaughters accompanied then-Sen. John Kerry for a bike ride in Colorado. Vaughters, who oversees the current Cannondale-Garmin Pro Tour team, expected the pedal with the politician to be a “dawdle.”
It proved to be anything but.
“A lot of times, you go on rides with executives or dignitaries or VIPs and it’s a very, very casually paced ride,” Vaughters said Sunday. “But Kerry is the real deal—fit, fast, confident. If he raced in his age category, he’d be one of the top riders in the U.S.”

Kerry is a HUGE amateur sports enthusiast! He has been injured skiing, and sailing (he has an enormous yacht). He loves almost all outdoor vigorous sports. He flies around the world playing around and having fun... and has since when he first became a senator (mostly on government funded trips). There has even been rumors... that on occasion... he paid for his fun with his own money.

About ten years ago I remember reading somewhere that his first ride after surgery for prostate cancer was a 70 miler from Boston to the Cape. He's a tough cookie; would have made a fine president.

John Kerry is my senator, and his "high-falutin' " cycling has been a source of bemusement to some of his critics here in Boston, along with the yacht, private plane, house on Beacon Hill, etc. I do wish him well, and his cycling is worthy of admiration.

The photo was taken during the Pan Mass Challage about 3 years ago. Huge ride thousands of riders.. Kerry showed up to ride the start with Armstrong then took a car to a couple of miles short of the finish and rode in with Armstrong. He skipped the 100 or so miles in The middle.

The guy has an incredible war record and afterwards has served his country ably. May his bike take him many more miles.
