First Impressions: BD Motobecane Mirage S

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I put a set of tourney shifters on my son's bike (7 speed freewheel). Unless you are spending a lot of time in the drops I don't think you need to upgrade them. The thumb shifters get a lot of negative comments but they shift fine. I would not upgrade this bike. Ride it, enjoy it and a few years from now upgrade the entire bike

I have an S and it is really good. I would have gotten an SL for $449 but my size was sold out. For that $50 more you get Claris 8 speed. The Claris shifters are way better than the Tourney.

The skewers that came with the S would not keep the rear tire from rubbing the chainstays. I replaced them with Shimano. The seatpost clamp stripped out easily.

I am especially pleased with the ride quality of the S.
