Novice looking for bike suggestions

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Novice looking for bike suggestions

I've got a couple years on my entry level Specialized road bike. I am beginning to look at a little more advanced bikes. Are there any suggestions for a good intermediary road bike. I am looking for a little better gearing for long, rolling hills rides. My max I can hope to afford is $2,000 or below. I know bikes can cost considerably more, but was hoping to find something that will work well for me. Thanks for any suggestions.

At 2k you should actually have a solid basis. It depends what you want. Do you want all the money into the bike or do you want some left over for bibs, gear, etc? Do you want a touring bike or a faster more sporty bike? Here are some options. (remember, MSRP is relative, and is usually lower in a bike shop than it is advertised online)
Sport
Aluminum: Will absorb more shock from the road, but will be more likely heavier than carbon, and not as responsive due to absorption and dampening of road feel.
Cannondale CAAD-10 105- MSRP $1680 (this was my first bike. i absolutely adored it, the only reason I sold it was because I bought it at a size that was too big for me)
Cannondale CAAD-10 Ultegra MSRP $2270
Trek Emonda ALR- debuting soon, a new Aluminum response to the light metal craze.
Giant TCR SLR 2- MSRP $1500. Runs a 105 groupset, aero aluminum

Carbon:
Will feel nimble, lighter, and more responsive. But will be more lively and vibrate more due to road condition.
Cannondale SuperSix EVO 105- MSRP $2270
BMC SLR03 105- Fantastic example of trickle down
Specialized Tarmac Sport- MSRP $2100. 105 group. 11 speed, 11-28 gearing. Whats not to love?

Good luck, let us know if you need more suggestions or any advice

If all you want is different gearing, $2K will buy you a lot of cassettes, cranksets, and chains, for you current bike if it fits you.

You can get a good Fuji (SST, Altamira, Gran Fondo, Transonic) for <$2K from Performance Bikes (There's one in Paoli, PA).

They all are carbon bikes with Ultegra components.
