Looking for a new road bike

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Recommended road bikes?

Hello! I am in the market for a new/upgraded road bike. The max I'm willing to spend is about $2000, and I'd like something lightweight and with good components. I am signed up for some fall centuries, so I thought it's a good time to get a bike now as I'm riding more in the summer.

Does anybody have any recommendations for good models that I should look at? I need something comfortable for long rides, as I'm not doing any short, speedy races. Thanks!

Sounds like you need an endurance bike.

Any of the big brands (e.g. Giant, Fuji, Cannondale, Trek, Specialized, Felt, Raleigh, etc.) make good bikes. You should be looking for a bike with either 105 or Ultegra components (someone else can add the level of Campy/SRAM).

You don't say where you live, how tall you are, what your inseam is, or what you weigh. All of these can factor into what good bikes are in your area.

You need to get out and road test bikes from several LBS's. Each brand's geometry is slightly different, and what feels good to one person, may literally be a pain in the buttocks to someone else. If you tell the sales people what you said above, they can direct you to several models at their store.

If you have friends that are good at bikes, they can help you pick out a good bike on Craig's List in your area.

For $2000, you should have no problem finding a full carbon frame, with 105 components. The wheelset will probably not be a high end wheelset, but that's OK, you'll upgrade that next year. You also need to determine which geometry you prefer, aggressive or more relaxed. As an example, the Specialized Tarmac Sport and Roubaix Sport are in your price range but offer different geometry and both are carbon frames. Other brands have similar models. This is a fun time for you, go out and try different brands and talk with sales folks to learn what their brands offer.

I'd look for a used Trek Domane.

You can easily get a 4 year old one in full carbon with Ultegra for $2000.
