How do you keep your spouse informed about "where you are at" when riding?

Just curious how you keep the home front informed where you are at when you leave on a ride. It was recently called to my attention that no one knows exactly where to look for me should I not return from a ride. I typically ride early in the a.m. and used to leave notes on the table. But the notes were no more than a general direction such as "riding downtown" or "heading south". But I have neglected the task lately and, the truth be told, those notes would be worthless if I wound up missing. I have been considering Garmin GPS products which allow internet tracking but I have been hesitant to get one due to cost.

So how do you let your family and friends know where you are at when riding - just in case?

(For simplicity - I'll just acknowledge all of the humorous responses now since I know they are coming......)

i don't. she's not my call-of-shame.

San Pedro 06-15-15 06:07 PM

Well, you could just give her your mistress's address, but that might lead to more troubles. Do you have a phone?

Diablito 06-15-15 06:11 PM

Garmin has a feature called "Live Track" . When you activate it, it sends an email link to whoever you want. Once they get the email they can follow you through out your ride. They get to see your progress during the ride. You have to activate it on your phone everytime you start a ride.

Typical text: Leaving soon. Taking Freeport route, home 630ish.

Google has an app on the market called "Life360" which works the same way as the Garmin Live Track but with out the stats. Works fine just isn't 100% accurate. Sometimes you get weird readings.

I'm twice divorced so I'm watching this thread for pointers

I usually give an estimated time of returning and tell her the general area where I'm riding. I bring my phone and wear a Road ID if things get serious.

af2nr 06-15-15 06:31 PM

RoadID also has an app that has tracking. I have never been on the receiving end of the process but my wife seems to have a pretty good idea where I have been riding at when I ride solo. It is free and allows you to customize different aspects of the tracking, stopping, etc.

My wife doesn't care. She know i wear a RoadID and she'll be contacted when to pickup the body.

fa63 06-15-15 06:39 PM

I let her know I am leaving, and give her an estimate of when I think I will be back. If I am not back within an hour of my estimated time, she will text or call to make sure I am not in a ditch on the side of a road somewhere.

Agree with above. Take cell phone so you can call if you have problems.

I say, "Right behind you" periodically while we ride.

FBinNY 06-15-15 06:43 PM

No need to inform in advance since I'm riding on roads that see some traffic. I carry ID, so the old saying goes "no news is good news".

It'd be different if I were mtn biking on trails where I might not be found for days.

Edonis13 06-15-15 06:47 PM

Garmin live track on occasion if I'm doing something out of the norm and she isn't with me/cares where I'm going. Otherwise I have a cell phone and the Uber and Lyft apps are linked with my Paypal account if I need a ride. I've only had to make the call-of-shame once and that was 8 years ago.

Wingsprint 06-15-15 06:50 PM

I bring her with me.

Public Service Announcement: Riding with the wife will result in a whole new level of back seat driving.

Also roadID here. Other than that, I just give her an approximate time that I'll return. And I carry a phone.

CycleMeter and RoadID

Find the RoadID app links here: https://www.roadid.com/ecrumbs .

Find CycleMeter for iOS linked here: https://abvio.com/cyclemeter/ . I think you pay $5 per year premium service which includes live tracking.

I've had some glitches with a previous version of RoadID, where the app stopped before I did and before the timer ended. I've had glitches with Garmin live tracking in the little I've used it. IIRC CycleMeter has been reliable, though my experience with it is shorter than with RoadID.

I have a physical RoadID and I appreciate their free app. I also used their app to design my "in case of accident contact..." on the phone screen as you'd see without logging in.

And I post on the fridge when I leave and approximately where I'm going.

Dave Cutter 06-15-15 07:01 PM

The phone can be located at anytime (if I fail to return). I keep emergency contact information right on my lock screen. I carry a laminated ID and insurance card in the baggie with my phone and cash. I verbally give my spouse a general idea as where I am going to be riding.

KAH 06-15-15 07:07 PM

iPhone "Find Friends" app. plus I let her know about what general route i have in mind.

fastk9dad 06-15-15 07:11 PM

Another RoadID app user here and I wear a Road ID band as well. The app is nice if you will be on roads that aren't heavily trafficked where you may not get noticed. The app will send an alert if you haven't moved in 5 minutes.

Ayers 06-15-15 07:20 PM

My iPhone has the "share my location" feature enabled for my wife to use if she wants. It shows a little real time map anytime she wants to look for me. It's accurate to within a couple hundred feet. You can choose who you want to share it with so not just anyone can see it.

intransit1217 06-15-15 07:25 PM

General idea of where I'm riding and the odd check in text. Half the time I'm with other riders.

jon c. 06-15-15 07:27 PM

I never provide a route. I often don't even plan a route until I'm riding. I usually ride some kind of a loop to the east, but there are enough variations that it would be hard to figure out where I was.

SpeshulEd 06-15-15 07:28 PM

Garmin live track or iphone find friends app. I have no mistress. :(
