Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Orbea Onix!

Well, I put an order in for a new 57cm Orbea Onix (orange paint scheme) over the weekend after test riding the Onix, Specialized Tarmac, Trek 5.2. I currently have a Waterford 1200 (now for sale) that I've had for the last 6 years, and thought I have had that bike long enough to deserve a new bike! The Orbea was ordered with an Ultegra 10 sp. group and Mavic Ksyrium Elites. It should be here by the weekend. I'll give a review after I put a few miles on it (weather permitting, Wisconsin you know)

Awesome! Lots of owners love the Onix, but why not keep the Waterford. Love Waterfords. I have a steel custom and cf bike and like riding both for their unique ride qualities. Have a great season with your new bike!

Hipcycler - Although I just joined today, I have been lurking around this board for 4-5 months. I too live in Milw., specifically Wauwatosa. Bought the Onix from Crankdaddy's - they were great. Maybe we'll see you around!

I found Crank Daddy's a couple of weeks ago. A 5 minute ride down the trail for me In my opinion, the nicest bike shop around! Friendly, knowledgeable, and none of the attitude of the others. I'm jealous of the onyx!

Actually, I believe the Onix is the stiffer ride. It's considered the stiffest bike Orbea makes.

The LBS I like to go to just picked up the Orbea line about a month ago. I was just checking them out a few days ago. The Onix looks like a nice bike. I didn't ride it so I can't comment on the ride quality. The drop, or down tube is monstrous at the head tube. Should be stiff as hell, but with the compliant ride of carbon....should be.

drroebuck, having ridden twice since I've gotten the bike (about 40 miles), I can say that it has a more comfortable ride than my steel Waterford. If this is considered stiffer than the Orca, I am impressed! Both stiffer and yet more comfy than steel - I'll take carbon fiber! Now if the LBS can only fix the problem of the chain being thrown when in 1st or 2nd I'll be a happy camper.

How does the Orbea compare with the Waterford 1200? Now that you've had a year or so to ride it.

Those asking about ride. I've had my new Onix with Ultegra 10 / Ksyrium Equipes for about 2 months (blue paint, not orange). I upgraded from a True Temper OX gold frame (old Fuji Team). While it was fairly easy to induce chain rub on the old frame, it is pretty much impossible on the Onix. At least I haven't been able to do it. I do not know if this is common to carbon bikes, but the bike communicates everything about the road surface, even more so than my steel bike, but it damps vibration really well, resulting in a more comfortable ride.

GSH -- did you get yours with the FSA SL-K compact? What are your thoughts so far (other than chain drop issues [ed]).

As far as stiffness, I believe the Opal is the stiffest Orbea. The Onix is fairly similar in design, but made of a cheaper grade of CF. At least that is according to my LBS.

The Opal is the stiffest bike - it's what Euskatel and Jelly Belly ride

The Opal is stiffer than the 2006 Orca, but I haven't heard how it's compared to the new 2007 Orca. According to Orbea, the Orca is the official Euskaltel's team bike. It'll be interesting to see if they will ride the Orca at the grand tours or they will stick with the Opal.

The Opal continues to be the Jelly Belly's team bike.

I was listening to the Fredcast #38 from 10/5/06 (Interbike Expo) where he interviews the guys from Orbea [19 min 10 seconds in]. They say there that the Opal is still the stiffest, however, the Orca is lighter. The Orbea team adds that most of the pro teams still/will race the Opal.

In the OP's defense, he posted on Feb22 and said he would get the bike in about a week.

Well, OP, that window has passed! pics!
