Ever feel like you almost need to change bikes mid-ride?? (too long, too short).....

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ever feel like you almost need to change bikes mid-ride?? (too long, too short).....

So I noticed today after a hard 60 miles yesterday, I started out a little uncomfortable this morning on the bike. The hoods felt a mile away, I felt in between a comfortable height and almost wanting to lay my chest or elbows down flat on something or even just sit up. I was squirming around, out of the saddle, back down, wriggling, trying to get into my groove with little success.

Then about 5 miles in, the body woke up and I start feeling like I almost can't get *uncomfortable*. Hoods, comfortable. Drops, comfortable. Sitting up hands-free, comfortable.

Then another 5 miles or so I start putting some speed down and I feel like everything's too short. I can't get stretched out enough, my elbows are too bent and I wish my drops were down around my front skewer or something.

Anyway.....good ride, had a few good Strava PR segments which is always nice and felt great by the end, but couldn't get over the change as my ride went on. In today's case I felt like I could have changed bikes TWICE on today's ride for a total of 3 bikes, easily.

Anybody else feel like that?

I feel that way now and then. Usually it's a "my bike is too big" day. I'm the oddball of the group. My bars are 5mm up from slammed, have a healthy drop, etc, and I cannot get comfortable on the hoods some days. They feel awkward, too far away, neck pain, and so on. And the drops just feel right which causes some funny looks now and then when you're climbing a long hill and spinning your arse off but riding in the drops because the hoods just don't feel right.

It's surely a sign of something fit related. That said even on bikes that fit me well I get that feeling, and it goes away if I move a bit and use different muscles. If something always feels wrong though, I change it. Remember, your fit evolves over time. What used to fit won't necessarily always fit.

Another weird thing, though I think related to "type" of riding was......

Last Thursday night.....hour-long climb up a mountain. Back was sore. Hands were getting numb. Butt was sore. It was just a "not feeling good all over" kinda night. This entire ride was about 20 miles total top back to bottom.

Then yesterday, I go on about a 3 hour long ride for a total of 60 miles with all kinds of ups, downs, hot weather, rough road, high speeds, etc. And I felt like I could've ridden another 60. Back was fine. Hands were fine. My thinking is that I was out of the saddle a lot more & in more various positions than the mountain climb which was a long, slow mash, mostly seated, struggling to go forward at all times.

Kinda. One really odd phenomenon I used to encounter more often the first year or so was that some morning's when heading out, it seemed like the bike and I were very tall, and other mornings it felt like I was crawling along the ground by comparison. I guess it's all about "settling in."

Never feel like it's a fit issue, but there have been a few rides when it was sunny heading out and then rain half way. Yeah, I wished I'd taken the bike with the fenders.

The only time I feel slightly uncomfortable on the bike is when I haven't been riding much, or have been off the bike for a week or more. For the first few rides after being off the bike it takes me longer to settle into position and let the body relax. This week has been much better and I'm getting some good miles in, so all feels good early in the ride. I haven't experienced the too big/too small feeling you are describing. Seems very odd to me. This might be influenced by a weak core if you're not doing any core exercises or any other strength training.
