Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First road bike - Giant CFR Team

Found this bike (1999, but never used) for $450 at a local shop, and found it very comfortable, loved the light weight. Would this be a good first road bike to purchase? I'd also like to possibly use it to commute from brooklyn to manhattan, as well as use it on bike paths and longer trips.

I am considering adding top side brakes to use in case i need to stop short (since i am not used to riding with drop handlebars yet). Are there any other adjustments i should look into? The skinny frame won't accomodate wheels/tires that are much wider than the racing tires that come with the bike.

Thanks! Your comments are greatly appreciated!

Hi,

"Found this bike (1999, but never used) for $450 at a local shop, and found it very comfortable, loved the light weight. Would this be a good first road bike to purchase?"

Sounds great.

" I'd also like to possibly use it to commute from brooklyn to manhattan, as well as use it on bike paths and longer trips."

It's not really an ideal choice for commuting. If it stays comfortable it would be fine for long rides.

"I am considering adding top side brakes to use in case i need to stop short (since i am not used to riding with drop handlebars yet)."

I have inline brake levers and love them.

" Are there any other adjustments i should look into?"

Most people need to find a good saddle; stock saddles are often torture devices. But I wouldn't worry about it until it becomes a problem.

"The skinny frame won't accomodate wheels/tires that are much wider than the racing tires that come with the bike."

That can be a problem. You can put on tires that are of higher quality, and slightly wider. You might consider some fancy bar tape like Specialized's Bar Phat.
