Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Good Nashbar Sales Now On and Good Flat Bar Road Bike for SO or Kids

Hi,

I found a second job at Nashbar ... (the joke being that when I reviewed my BikesDirect bike positively I was accused of working for BikesDirect).

They have a pretty good sale on for today and tomorrow. 21% off and free shipping off anything over $49. In addition they have some interesting Nashbar branded merchandise now on sale.

I picked up this bike Nashbar Flat Bar Women's Road Bike
for $276 delivered to my door. Its the exact same as the Performance Bike's Monterey ST (see SE Bikes Monterey 24-Speed Women's Comfort Bike - 2015) but $100 cheaper and actually in stock (Performance didn't have them in stock).

Its actually a pretty unique bike. Its a flat bar road bike which weights in under 25 pounds and has complete (bottom of the line Shimano drive train) as well as 28mm tires. Most entry level flat bar road bikes (i.e. Diamondbacks, Giant etc.) had at most 2 out of the 3 and often just 1.

There is actually a men's version of this bike with a 17inch version (748mm stand over) which would be great for a young kid.

Also, note that 2014 version has a 21 speed (Altus FD, RD) and the 2015 version (mentioned above) has a 24 speed (Acera RD and Altus FD) for the same price so get the 2015 version. The 2014 version is available from many resellers under the Nashbar and SE Monterey brands.

I am on both Nashbar's and Performances e-mail lists. Get a couple of e-mail sale notices each week. Only problem is you must excercise self control.

Doh! Where were you 5 hours ago when I purchased! I wonder how Nashbar make any money at this rate. That's nearly one third off already pretty good prices.

Yesterday I ordered a FSA SL-K Light EVO crankset for $200 from Nashbar . Im hype. My Shimano 105 crank weighs in at almost 900grams. The K-Light is about 550 grams. That's $200 for almost a freakin pound off my bike and they look sweet. Can I get this 11% off from my already placed order?

I don't think it works, applying the 11% off coupon would take away the 21% off discount

no, it works. I just purchased $556.93(sub total) worth of stuff and got $165.35 off the subtotal. 21% would have only yielded a savings of $116.96. This savings is closer to 29.7% off the subtotal. I believe they take the 21% off first and then the additional 11%.. so you get an additional ~8.7% off in reality which when added to the 21% = 29.7% off in total.

I just tried it and it cancelled out the 21% and replaced it with 10%. Now I can't get the 21% back! Not that it matters, there wasn't really anything I needed, I was just curious if you really could get 30% off!

I guess I got lucky and got in under the wire

I placed my order at 8:31 AM Eastern time so maybe they didn't realize their mistake. I just assumed they were doing another 30% off deal with the extra 11% on top of the 21%. I guess when they got in, they had the dev team fix it.

So the flat bar road bike which comes in a 17inch version is now on sale for $229.

https://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product..._#ReviewHeader

I got the woman's version of this and its really quite a nice bike. It has mountain bike components but is well put together.

How are you liking your Nashbar Flat Bar Road bike? May I ask how tall you are and what size you got?

I had no idea about it being the same model as the SE Monterey model. That's interesting. The Nashbar bike in May was 299.99 so it's gone up 50.00.

I see that Proboard Shop has the Monterey 21 speed for 250.00. So the 21 speed is the same bike except it just has 21 speeds? If so, I don't see the need to spend more on 2 extra speeds so might just get the red one.

https://www.proboardshop.com/qsem21st...-se-bikes.html

Also found a blue Monterey 24 speed for 280 on Amazon so may consider that instead of the Nashbar one since ends up being the same price when factoring in Nashbar's shipping cost and of course taking advantage of their 25% discount next time they have it.

What are you doing about water bottle on your bike? I also like to listen to podcasts from my phone and wonder how to carry it on the bike. Any suggestions.

Thanks.

I bought the 17in for my SO who is 5 foot 2 inches. It fits them very well.

The bike is heavy (stock weight 25 pounds) but put together extremely well. It's perfect for a new rider as its stable but I wouldn't recommend it for an experience rider as its not particularly responsive.

The mini v-brakes have extremely good stopping capability, the shifting is pretty amazing for such an inexpensive bike.

I've done some upgrades to the bike:

a) The stock tires are heavy (800 grams for the pair) so I got some Rubino folding tires which knocked 350 grams of the bike weight.

b) The stock wheelset is sturdy but my SO only weights 120 pounds so I upgraded them to some Fulcrum 7 LG which saved 1.5 pounds (2500 grams vs 1750 grams).

Sounds like you have a nice setup for your SO. I think I now have my mind made up to get the SE Monterey bike mentioned above especially if it is the same bike as the Nashbar, it is cheaper.

Do you think the 17" would be too small for someone 5'6"?
