Fit for road/mtb shoes of the same brand/model

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Fit for road/mtb shoes of the same brand/model

I've been wearing a pair of Shimano SH-RA80 road shoes, but have been having problems with my toes going numb even on short rides. I used to use my Pearl Izumi Vagabond mtb shoes before I got them. My thought was to replace the shimano's with a pair of the Pearl Izumi Vagabond II. I was wondering if others used the same brand/model of shoes for road mtb, and if the fit is usually comparable.

Also, I'm using Speedplay X5 pedals, with the cleats as far forward as they'll go. Am I right, that its probably the shoes, and not the pedals? thanks!
