Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

candy c problems

I recently installed some candy c pedals on my bike. I've only ridden on them about 5 or 6 times but I've been having a bit of a problem. Clipping out is usually fine (though I did take a fall at an intersection on my 2nd ride ) but it's clipping in that's giving me problems. I find that I really have to mash my foot into the pedal to get the cleat to engage. I'm using them with Diadora Geckos and have shaved off some of the tread to prevent it from hitting the platform. Anyone else experienced similar problems?

Also, another thing I've noticed is that when my foot is at the furthest forward point during the pedal stroke, the front of my shoe can hit the front tire when I make a sharp turn. The cleat is already pretty far forward on the shoe, and I'd rather not be clipped in at my toes. Does this happen to anyone else? Should I just ignore it or is it a legitimate problem and are there any solutions?

Thanks

I ride with Candy SLs, which are basically identical. I've noticed that if you use a shim under the cleat, even if they will work without it, it's much easier to clip in and you get better float.

As for the toe overlap problem...some frame/fork/crank combinations do that. Without changing one of those, there's not much to be done about it (other than repositioning your cleat, which you've already done).
